About Ian

Learning an instrument is first and foremost about falling in love with music. I was born into a family of musicians and teachers and started playing drums at the ripe old age of 3 - music has been my greatest love for as long as I can remember. Through my teenage years I sank my teeth into a career as a frontman, and after well over a decade of live performing experience, I've found even greater satisfaction in sharing this passion with others.

I’ve given TEDx Talks, spoken at career fairs, offered workshops at elementary schools, taught a small concert band I led from home as a 15 year old, given private lessons online, and applied similar skills to the bandleading I do for my own projects. My work as a composer has been featured in public school and college performances, competitions, festivals, podcasts, and film. As a performer, I’ve been lucky enough to share the stage with The Blind Boys of Alabama, Third Eye Blind, BJ Leiderman (of NPR fame), and The Accidentals, among others.

About the lesson

-What To Expect-
Whether you're coming to the drums fresh or looking to hone your skills for the next big gig, my goal is for you to fall in love with the instrument and push your limits! What this means in practical terms is a song-first methodology rooted in the live music world, building fundamentals for technical control and comfort with an emphasis on improvisation and interaction with your bandmates. I put an early focus on identifying learning styles and building problem-solving skills to allow you to tackle even the most challenging songs piece by piece. I also place a lot of value on the "why," giving you real-world context for every exercise and practice routine so you never feel disconnected from your goals as a student. You can expect creative weekly warmups to get your hands in shape, personalized repertoire choices to strengthen specific concepts, and a flexible curriculum that adapts to your interests while fleshing out your toolkit with every new challenge.

-The Philosophy-
I come from an environment of session musicians, so while I started with a focus on rock and funk drumming, I quickly learned to adapt to as many genres and settings as possible. As a teacher, I use that mentality to support my students in becoming well-rounded musicians, able to take center stage or support their bandmates in equal measure, and fearlessly executing grooves in every style. This balanced approach also means we'll look at multiple solutions for any given challenge, allowing you to make informed decisions and build your voice as a musician to your own taste.
