About Kurt

I've been working as a professional session drummer in Cape Town for over 22 years, performing and recording across jazz, African fusion, pop, rock, hip hop, and electronic music. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with artists including Freshlyground, PHFAT, Mac McKenzie & The Ghoema Captains, Nonku Phiri, and many others, as well as performing at major South African festivals and on television.

Alongside performing, I've taught drums, piano, and ensembles at several schools and music academies, including School of Rock, Camps Bay High School, Woodstock Music Academy, and the French International School. Teaching is something I genuinely enjoy, and I love helping students discover their own musical voice.

I also play piano, guitar, and bass, produce electronic music under my artist name Kumodi, and compose music for film and documentary projects. I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies (Drums) at the University of Cape Town. I believe that continuing to learn makes me a better musician and, more importantly, a better teacher.

My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and structured. I adapt lessons to each student's goals, whether you're picking up the sticks for the first time, preparing for exams, or looking to improve your technique, groove, timing, improvisation, or musicality. While my lessons are relaxed and enjoyable, I also believe that consistent practice and commitment are the keys to real progress.

About the lesson

I teach beginner- to intermediate-level drummers of all ages, with every lesson tailored to each student's goals, experience, and learning style.

I aim to prepare students for real-world musical situations, not just exams or exercises. Alongside developing solid technique, timing, coordination, and musicality, I introduce students to skills that modern drummers increasingly need, including reading music, improvisation, playing with other musicians, and an introduction to electronic drumming, music technology, and programming, where appropriate.

Whether your goal is to play in a band, perform live, record in the studio, prepare for exams, or simply enjoy making music, lessons are designed to build confidence while providing a strong musical foundation.

Lessons are conducted in English in a friendly, supportive, and structured environment where students are encouraged to enjoy the learning process while continually challenging themselves to improve.

My standard lesson rate is R450 per hour. A travel fee of R50 applies for home visits within my local area; longer distances can be discussed before booking. Discounted rates are available for students who book lesson packages. The first lesson is free, giving us an opportunity to meet, discuss your goals, and make sure we're a good fit before committing to ongoing lessons.
