As a tutor working for yourself there are a number of legal considerations to think about to protect yourself and your students.
It’s important to keep your income and taxes up to date and a legal requirement to declare your income. Are Superprof involved in payment? No, Superprof are not involved in the payment process between tutors and students: it is for both parties to decide how they want to be paid, whether it's by cash, bank transfer, or through another means.
Insure yourself. It’s not a legal requirement to be insured as a tutor in SA, but it’s a standard practice to do so. Consider public liability insurance, business and portable equipment insurance and professional indemnity insurance.
Be aware of health and safety. This means providing a safe environment for students to learn. This is very important if you plan to teach from your home.
Advertise honestly. Every claim you make must be factually correct, and you should be able to provide documentary proof of any qualification you claim to hold.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It’s not a legal requirement for tutors to have a DBS check in SA. However, this can provide reassurance, especially to parents of students.
Working as a tutor has many advantages. From flexible hours, to great hourly pay, everyone can benefit from passing on their knowledge as a private tutor.
Qualifications are only one part of become a tutor. Experience and knowledge of your subject are equally as important as is being a good educator and communicator. Discover more about tutor qualifications in our dedicated blog.

Creating your listing could not be simpler, just follow the step by step instructions on Superprof and fill out each section. Here are a few helpful tips to help make it as visible as possible to potential students, allowing them to find you:
Highlight your strengths (your skills, your experience...)
Ask yourself why a potential client may choose you over another peer tutor. Explain what differentiates you and makes your private lessons exceptional. Explain your learning style and teaching methodology.
Tell your story.
Teaching is not just about passing on your knowledge; it is also about building a bond of trust with your students. Showing your human side is very important. Showing that you’re an interesting and thoughtful person, willing and capable of listening to others. Mention your hobbies, groups you’re part of, your travels, your past work experience, and successes in life.
Focus on the Benefits: What are you providing to your future students?
Try to avoid technical terms difficult to comprehend. Also avoid bland or cliché phrases that do not detail what you will provide. For example, do not just say “I teach maths at all levels and for all abilities", mention the exact levels at which you teach (UMAT, VCE, QCE, HSC, Gmat, Uni etc.) as well as the exact topics (algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, etc.)
Include a picture that makes you stand out
Clear frontal photos of your face are an important way for students and teachers to build confidence in each other. You will increase the number of requests you receive 4 fold by adding a high quality & professional picture of yourself.
Review your listing
A listing full of mistakes will not be taken seriously. Re-read your ad with a text editor and make a final review before publishing.
For all our students who are yet to achieve SuperStar status , we require you to offer your first lesson for free. Even once you have achieved this status, Superprof recommends that you offer the first class for free as it;
...allows you to establish rapport with the student
The purpose of the first meeting is not to give a class to your pupil, but to get to know and understand what their needs are, set up a lesson plan and a teaching method that will allow your pupil to reach his/her goals.
...is a small investment for a greater reward
Offering one hour of your time for free to a student who may use your services all year and spread the word about your services is an excellent investment.
...It reassures students
Students will contact you more frequently. Just put yourself in their shoes; would you agree to pay someone without having met them, or being assured that they're the type of teacher your looking for?
If your listing is of interest to a potential student, Superprof will automatically send you an email/SMS to let you know.
So be reactive!
Some students contact several teachers at once to be sure to find a perfect fit. The longer you wait to answer them, the more likely it is that the will find another teacher in the meantime...
The more responsive you are, the more Superprof will improve the visibility of your ad (reactivity is part of Superprof's selection criteria).
Target your ads
If you give classes in several subjects (eg maths & english), create as many ads as you have subject areas. This will allow your classes to be more targeted (only indicate your maths experience in the maths ad ...) and adapt your rates according to the subject taught.
Do some experimenting
If few students contact you, increase or decrease your rates and / or change the title of your ad and / or profile picture and see what happens.
Engage in some shameless self promotion
Share your Superprof ads on social networks, on specialized sites or on classified ad sites. Ask your baker, pharmacist, neighbourhood association or your other students if they know someone who is looking for private lessons ! The more you talk about yourself, the quicker you'll find students.
It’s simple! Find your tutor through our search engine.
Choose your subject and yourcity or neighbourhood, and that’s it! You’ll be able to access thousands of our best tutors, who are available to give lessons near you or via webcam.
Once you have run the initial search, you’ll be able to filter it by level, price, distance, ...
When you have chosen a tutor, you can contact them by clicking on the "Book a lesson" button, found on the top right of the ad.
We ask our tutors to be as transparent as posible in their teaching ads and carefully detail their experience, methodology and resume.
Verification of their personal details and the information provided
We verify the identity, personal details (telephone number, e-mail address, photo) and university diploma of all of our tutors.
100% authentic reviews – The strength of the community
We verify all of the reviews and recommendations that our tutors receive to guarantee that they are 100% authentic. Only our members can leave reviews for our tutors. You can rest assured that our tutors are excellent, competent and available thanks to our community of millions of students!
Both their ratings (for example: 5/5) and their response time (for example: 1 hour) are displayed and refreshed in real time.
You can also see the tutor’s last connection on Superprof so that you can check their recent activity on the site.
Recommendations from their former students and friends
The reviews and recommendations the tutors receive from their former students can give you an idea of the quality of their lessons and their teaching style.
We have developed a system that works in real-time to assess the availability of the teachers through the analysis of their site activity and their responsiveness to other students. Teachers who become inactive for a period of time are contacted and eventually hidden from seach results if no response is received. The teachers that are displayed in the search results are thus, available.
However, we suggest that you specify your availability so that the teacher can make sure that your lesson request is compatible with their schedule.
At Superprof, our teachers write and publish their own ads.
We encourage you to read them attentively in order to find the teachers’ rates, information concerning their methodology (whether they offer face to face lessons or by webcam, etc) and all other information. Once you have found your teacher, book a lesson with them.
During the booking process, be specific about what you want to learn, your needs, background, level and availability so that the teacher can reply to your request with full knowledge of your conditions. Don’t worry, our teachers only accept lessons that they know they will be able to give.
And lastly, enjoy your lessons with Superprof, our teachers are excellent and you’ll love to learn with them 😃.
