As a tutor working for yourself there are some legal considerations to think about to protect yourself and your students.
Firstly, itâs important to keep up with your income taxes and to declare your income to SARS.
Superprof is not involved in the payment process between tutors and students: it is for both parties to decide how they want payment to happen, whether it's in cash, by bank transfer, or via other means.
Consider insurance. Itâs not a legal requirement to be insured as a tutor in SA, but you may want to consider public liability insurance, business and portable equipment insurance and professional indemnity insurance.
Be aware of health and safety. This means providing a safe environment for students to learn. This is very important if you plan to teach from your home.
Advertise honestly. Every claim you make must be factually correct, and you should be able to provide documentary proof of any qualification you claim to hold.
Having a criminal record check can provide reassurance to your students and to the parents of young students. You should be aware that employers in South Africa are permitted to carry out certain background checks, such as criminal record checks, even on contingent or freelance workers. (These checks are subject to the conditions imposed by several pieces of legislation.)
Working as a tutor has many advantages, from flexible hours, to great hourly pay. Everyone can benefit from passing on their knowledge as a private tutor.
You do not need to have a formal teaching qualification, but you do need experience and knowledge of your chosen subject.
You must have an aptitude for the subject you wish to teach, and be able to help students improve their understanding of the subject (or their skill level in a particular sport or other activity).
It is also important that you are a good communicator.
As a tutor, you must be at least one level more advanced than your targeted students and, if you wish to teach a language, you should be a native speaker of the language or, if not, must be a proficient or expert user.
To delete your account permanently, click on the âMy Accountâ tab on your dashboard and scroll down to the âDelete Accountâ section. Then tick on 'Delete both my account and my listings' if you have already created tutoring announcements or on 'Delete my account' if you have not created any listings.
Alternatively, if you just wanted to take your listings offline temporarily, you could simply deactivate them temporarily. In order to do this, all you have to do is login to your dashboard, select the 'Manage my ads' tab, and then click on the green button on the right-hand side of your listing. You are free to reactivate your adverts whenever you please!

Creating your tutoring ad could not be simpler, just follow the step-by-step instructions on the Superprof site and fill out each section. Here are a few tips to help make your ad as visible as possible to potential students:
Highlight your strengths: Mention your skills, your experience, etc.
Ask yourself why a potential client may choose you over another tutor. Explain what differentiates you and makes your private lessons exceptional. Describe your teaching style and methodology.
Tell your story
Teaching is not just about passing on your knowledge, it is also about building a bond of trust with your students. Showing your human side is very important. Showing that youâre an interesting and thoughtful person, willing and capable of listening to others. Mention your hobbies, groups youâre part of, your travels, your past work experience, and successes in life.
Focus on the benefits: What are you providing to your future students?
Try to avoid technical terms that are difficult to comprehend, as well as vague terms and phrases. For example, do not just say âI teach Maths at all levels and for all abilities", mention the exact levels at which you teach (primary school, matric, college etc.) as well as the exact topics (algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, etc.)
Include a picture that makes you stand out
A clear, high-quality photo which shows your face clearly is an important way for students and teachers to connect. You will increase the number of contacts you make tenfold by adding a good picture of yourself.
Review your ad
An advertisement full of mistakes will not be taken seriously. Re-read your ad with a text editor and make a final review before publishing.
If you do not have a review from a student already, Superprof requires you to offer your first session for free, however this does not have to be a formal lesson.
The first meeting is usually reserved for getting to know each other, understanding the aims and objectives of the student and agreeing on a teaching plan that works for everyone. The first meeting can take the form most convenient to both parties.
Even if you do have a review, Superprof recommends that you offer the first class for free because:
It allows you to make a connection with the student
The purpose of the first meeting is not to give a class to your pupil, but to get to know and understand what their needs are, set up a lesson plan and a teaching method that will allow your pupil to reach his/her goals.
It is a small investment for a greater reward
Offering one hour of your time for free to a student who may use your services all year and spread the word about your services is an excellent investment.
You'll be contacted more frequently
Students will contact you more frequently as they will be reassured and will feel more engaged. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you agree to pay someone without having met them, or being assured that they're the type of teacher you're looking for?
The adverts for your online lessons are automatically included in the search results presented to students using the Superprof site in those countries where English is spoken.
It is possible for you to translate your adverts into multiple languages in order for them to appear in searches run in non-English speaking countries, and you can do so by logging into your account and then following the steps below:
- Click on the "My ads" button which appears in the grey bar across the top of your dashboard
- Click on the "Edit" button next to the advert you wish to translate
- Select "Add a Language" in the grey bar across the top of the page
- Then you simply need to tick the languages into which you wish for the advert to be translated.
Once you have validated the translations, your advert will be shown in the countries in which your selected additional languages are spoken.
Webcam lessons can be set up in just a few steps. All you need is an Internet connection and a webcam program.
For one-on-one lessons:
You can download any of these tools for free, and they will allow you to carry out your lessons on your computer, tablet, or phone:
- Skype
- Google Hangouts
- FaceTime
- You could even rely on regular phone calls when it comes to speaking practise for language classes.
For group classes (up to 10 people):
We recommend using Google Hangouts.
This is available from:
- The Google Hangouts website
- Your Gmail Inbox
- The Google Hangouts Mobile Applications (Android, iOS)
- The Google Hangouts extension in your Google Chrome web browser.
You will find more information on how to set up a video conference via this link.
Setting up the webcam lesson:

- Download your chosen application (once-off).
- Ask your student to download the application and share their username with you.
- Connect with your student at the scheduled time for your class.
If you need any help, please contact our customer support team at hellozar@superprof.com.
Target your ads
If you offer lessons in several subjects (eg. Maths, English and French), create as many ads as you have distinct subject areas. This will help to ensure better referencing of your tutoring announcements in the lesson searches run by students. Be sure to adapt your rates according to the subject taught.
Do some experimenting
If few students have contacted you, try:
- Changing your rate (if possible)
- Adjusting the title of your advert to make it more catchy and memorable
- Updating your profile picture. Be sure to use a high-quality image, which shows your face clearly.
Engage in some shameless self promotion
Share your Superprof ads on your social networks and talk to your acquaintances. The more you talk about yourself and the more people there are who know about your tutoring services, the more likely you are to find students.
As each student and tutor is unique, there is not one specific lesson structure that can be applied across the board. We recommend that you have a general lesson plan for your subject, but that this is tailored to the specific needs and objectives of each student.
Below are some guidelines that may be useful:
(After the first lesson) Correct the exercises and review the material from the previous class (5-10 min)
This is a great way to test your students and make sure that they don't forget the material seen before.
Review the current lesson (15-20 min)
To know which points are most crucial for the student, it is a good idea to have them review the class. Ask them to describe what they have learnt, what do they mean, and can they expand on less assimilated points.
Give practise exercises (20-30 min)
Understanding a course is good, but knowing how to apply your knowledge as part of a problem, an exercise or in real life is better. Have your student do as many exercises as possible.
Take stock (5-10 minutes)
Ask your pupil to make sure they understand the notions seen during the session.
Allocate homework
So your student does not forget everything from one week to the next, allocate some exercises to allow them to revise the most important notions as well as those concepts with which they still have some difficulty.
The more responsive you are, the more Superprof will improve the visibility of your ad in searches.
Also, students often contact several teachers at once to be sure to find the perfect fit. If your listing is of interest to a potential student, Superprof will automatically send you an email and/or SMS to let you know. The longer you wait to answer the student, the more likely it is that they will find another teacher, so be reactive.
Itâs simple! Use our search engine to find your tutor.
Choose your subject and your city or neighbourhood, and thatâs it! Youâll be able to access thousands of our best tutors, who are available to give lessons near you or via webcam.
Once you have run the initial search, youâll be able to filter it by price, distance, learning level, etc.
When you have chosen a tutor, you can contact them by clicking on the "Book a lesson" button, found on the top right of the tutor's announcement.
Profile transparency
We ask our tutors to be as transparent as possible in their teaching ads and to carefully detail their experience, methodology and resume.
Verification of their personal details and the information provided
We verify the identity, personal details (telephone number, e-mail address, photo) and qualifications of our tutors.
100% authentic reviews â The strength of the community
We verify all of the reviews and recommendations that our tutors receive to guarantee that they are 100% authentic. Only our members can leave reviews for our tutors. You can rest assured that our tutors are excellent, competent and available thanks to our community made up of millions of students!
Both their ratings (for example: 5/5) and their response time (for example: 1 hour) are displayed and refreshed in real time.
You can also see the tutorâs last connection on Superprof so that you can check their recent activity on the site.
Recommendations from their former students and friends
The reviews and recommendations the tutors receive from their former students can give you an idea of the quality of their lessons and their teaching style.
We have developed a system that works in real-time to assess the availability of the teachers through the analysis of their site activity and their responsiveness to other students. Teachers who become inactive for a period of time are contacted and eventually hidden from search results if no response is received from them. The teachers that are displayed in the search results are thus, available.
However, we suggest that you specify your own availability so that the teacher can make sure that your lesson request is compatible with their schedule.
At Superprof, our teachers write and publish their own ads.
We encourage you to read the announcements carefully in order to find the teacher's rates and other important information such as their teaching style and methodology.
When you are ready to book your lesson with a tutor, be specific about what you want to learn, your needs, background, learning level and availability so that the tutor can reply to your request with full knowledge of your requirements. Donât worry, our teachers only accept lessons that they know they will be able to give.
And, lastly, enjoy your lessons with Superprof, our teachers are excellent and youâll love learning with them đ.
