About Eric

I have been teaching professional drum lessons since 2006 to students of all ages and skill levels. Earlier on in my music career I found a strong passion for teaching and saw how enlightening it is to share the gift of music. I want to give aspiring drummers the right tools that will allow them to accomplish their goals as an overall musician. Whether they want to cover a specific style, develop a solo or just know the basics of the instrument, I am here to provide the stepping stones for success. In lessons we can cover anything that you want to learn and most importantly we are just going to have some fun playing the drums.

Working with a variety of students and seeing them accomplish their goals as a musician is very enjoyable as an instructor. I like to create individual lesson plans for my students based on their learning style. It is just as inspirational for me, as it is the student, when the light bulb goes off and they understand and master the very thing that has been holding them back.

My teaching career started when I was in high school and I would go to my students’ houses to give lessons. Some of my students were just getting into drums for the first time while others where older gigging musicians around the area. I continued teaching lessons all throughout college. Currently I have multiple students enrolled in lessons at my studio, student's homes, online, and High Schools in the Chicago area.

Going to Lawrence University for Percussion Performance enabled me to study music from around the world while working with world class musicians and professors. I studied classical and jazz percussion with Dane Richeson, West African percussion with Nani Agbeli, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion with Michael Spiro and jazz composition with Fred Sturm. Other private teachers include Mike Mangini from Dream Theater and Dom Famularo. After college I worked at a music center for 3 years as the drum/percussion instructor and when I moved to Chicago I continued teaching some of those students through Skype. Currently I am the percussion director at Lane Tech High School where I implement the school curriculum in relation to the goals of the individual student.

About the lesson

I start each new student by assessing his or her level of comfort and skill on the instrument, then establish goals for us to work toward. Each lesson is customized to the individual student and his or her goals.

Throughout my years of teaching I have had students from the age 5 to age 67 ranging from beginner to advance touring musicians.

I highly suggest an aspiring drummer to find a great drum teacher that can provide the right tools that will allow them to accomplish their goals as an overall musician. A good instructor will be able to breakdown complex information to a level that is understandable for the student. Most importantly the instructor has to provide a fun and safe atmosphere for the student in order to maximize their growth as a musician.

I recently had a student who had no prior experience on drums but wanted to play to one of her favorite songs. By the third lesson she was playing to her favorite song and within a couple of months she was playing in group that performs around the Chicago area.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students seeking an instructor should start thinking about some specific goals that they want to obtain on their instrument. The teacher will then be able to provide stepping stones that will help the student reach their goals.

Details

My students can either have their lesson at my studio, at their home, or online via Skype. My general pricing per lesson is $30 per half hour and $50 per hour lesson. This rate could change for additional travel times to students home or if the student would prefer a longer lesson.
