About Azmyne

I am an electrical engineering student with a passion for teaching. I've been tutoring students for nearly 5 years and have been doing it professionally for the last 3. I've had students as young as 4th graders to college and older non-traditional students.
I draw my experience from my volunteering days in high school as well as professional experience in the last few years.

My teaching method mirrors my field of study – learning through practice. The bulk of one's success comes from their own willingness to try. I amplify this by showing my students different methods and trying to pinpoint which method suits them the best. My technique of instruction is often tailor-made for the student I'm working with.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My chosen field is Electrical Engineering. I've always been fond of electronics and I want to become a professor down the line. I wanted to share my love of the pertinent subjects of EE with as many people as possible. With my classes, I unfortunately didn't have good professors. I wanted to be the good teacher I never had before. These led me to becoming a private tutor, and in turn hopefully a good professor for my future students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Mathematics and Physics the most. But I also will shift my focus to English writing. I think my most favorite things to talk about in math are differentiation/integration and graphing. On the flip side, I am not a fan of statistics and trigonometry on higher levels. Although I know how to do them and always use them in my classes, I've really never liked them. I have always been a keen reader, which is why I love writing, just my own stories or my musings, when I find the time.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My biggest motivation is actually one of my professors. He was my Physics I professor. He followed a similar path as I want to - to work in the engineering industry for some time and then to become a professor. I had made a very elementary mistake in a lab, he looked at me and very seriously told me to drop out of Electrical Engineering and become a janitor instead. To this day, he inspires me to work harder and harder, so that I never have to hear something like that again. I want to be part of the tutors, teachers and professors who don't say things like this.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think I'm good at communicating and am good at public speaking - both of which are often a rarity in the STEM fields. I also know my chosen subjects (math and physics) well, so pertinent or tangential questions are answerable by me. Lastly, I care for the students I work with, rather than tutoring for the sake of tutoring.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my second year in Electrical Engineering (EE), I was the lead for team building a LED cube carrying Bluetooth remote control car. The part of the team that was responsible for the LED cube never produced a viable product. As the lead, it was my responsibility to be more involved in their work, checking in more often and making sure they were actually doing what they were supposed to. It taught me to not be too lenient on your teammates.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of my biggest problems I still face in my classes is the use of trigonometry. I spent a lot of time learning it and often tutor it as well. But the trigonometry that is used in my classes often, by far, outclass what I'm used to. So, it is still a difficult concept for me.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I do have a passion for teaching, especially STEM. I've always been interested in giving back to my community, and teaching tough concepts or classes is a valuable way to do that. On the side of the subject, my love for alternative energy is highly based on math concepts. So by extension, my passion for math originates from that.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I think I have a love, a passion and a drive to become a good tutor, teacher or professor that most people don't. I've had my ups and downs, I've come to know my students well and in turn, I've gotten to know myself well. As the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, said "Mastering yourself is true power." I want to bring my understanding of myself to help others as much as I can.
