About Henry

I'm currently in my second year at the University of Oxford studying Theology & Religion. Theology is a subject which I have found increasingly absorbing the more I have understood the thought processes required to engage with it. The way it challenges the relevance of ideas that originated in the past to that of the contemporary world is of great interest to me, particularly as I have increased my understanding of the very concept of theology as an art form.

The pressure placed on students during examination season is a reality that all too many students experience in their school careers. In fact, it's a pressure that can be experienced right from sitting entrance exams for primary school, all the way through to sitting your finals at the end of university! Exams can be scary, they can be frustrating, they can cause one's whole spectrum of emotions to come out... but, they can also be incredibly rewarding. Given the right preparation, academic outlook, revision and exam techniques there's no reason why one shouldn't fly into their exams with the confidence that they can achieve the grade they are capable of.

Through my tutorials I hope to fuel an engagement and a desire to learn that will motivate my students to leave their lessons feeling like they are in a better place than they started, and confident that they can attack their revision and exam preparation with renewed enthusiasm, better time-management and increased understanding.

About the lesson

In my tutorials, my primary aim is to teach a fun and enjoyable approach for my students to adopt towards their work.

In each tutorial I will narrow down which topic area the student is required to focus on. Unfortunately, the main drawback with a number of modern textbooks is that they categorise their topic areas in groupings which can be unhelpful and confusing, particularly because there is often overlap between subjects. My tutorials aim to simplify the approach by honing in on particular areas of difficulty and providing solutions to problems my students are having. In my own revision, this approach has been extremely helpful for finding areas of weakness in my learning and understanding.

In my first sessions, I find it extremely useful to get to know the student better. I want my students to feel completely comfortable and honest when they are in their tutorials so that they feel like they can voice any concerns they may have and let me know where there may be blocks in their subject knowledge or comprehension of concepts. In the follow-up session I will always try and test the learning from the previous tutorial before moving on. A short quiz at the start of these tutorials will allow me to both see how they are progressing but also to understand better their ability to consolidate their learning. This process of going over previous knowledge increases the speed of progress.
