About Iona

I earned my Master's degree in special education from the Metropolitan State University of Denver and my Bachelor's of Fine Arts in theater/acting from the State University of New York at Purchase. I have been teaching ESL/EFL for over 10 years - working with students in public schools and one-on-one online. I have been teaching Shakespeare, voice, speech, and the Standard American accent for over 15 years now.

I have helped hundreds of students with a variety of needs and language goals, including business professionals worldwide who want to improve their confidence in meetings with English speakers, actors/singers who want to adopt the Standard American accent, and hobbyists who just love learning and speaking English.

Whether you are young or old, novice or advanced, a hobbyist or need to learn English/Standard American accent for work, I have the experience, patience and tools you need to help you reach your language goals.

About the lesson

My background in special education and theater helps me to cater lessons to the individual student's interests and to use a variety of learning tools to meet their needs. These tools include: visual aids, videos, role play (through improv and/or scripts), writing and oral tasks (eg. summarizing tv shows and books), and a shared google file that shows all grammar, vocabulary, idiom, and pronunciation corrections. I find that this shared file helps students tackle their language challenges and goals in an organized and practical way.

Furthermore, I am an energetic, dynamic, friendly and sensitive teacher. I can easily navigate my students' needs and pivot lessons as needed. I absolutely love working with students young and old, new and long-term, novice and advanced, and I am passionate about helping them build their confidence and meet their language goals.
