I am a firm believer that anybody can learn maths with the right explanations and encouragement. Because of this, I try to tailor my sessions to be as engaging as possible. I will encourage curiosity, critical thinking and interest in engaging with new or hard ideas (all skills that are very useful in any subject).

The first (free!) session will consist of: me and the student getting to know each other, talking about the students interests, talking about where they're at in school and any self identified areas of difficulty (for younger students this part can come from the parents), any goals they'd like to work towards (such as exam grades, asking more questions in school lessons ect) as well as working through a few problem solving questions. This allows me to get an understanding of the students ways of thinking and therefore, help me find and make the best resources possible to help. It also allows the student to decide if they like me! There's no point in having a tutor you don't get on with and if that's not me that's absolutely alright.

After this, a typical session will cover one concept that they might have been struggling with in class. We will explore ways of understanding the idea, and ways to approach questions about the concept. Exactly what we do will depend on what methods work or seem worth trying with the student. We will then work through a practice question about it together. At the end we will agree on what work would be reasonable to do for next time (this will usually just be a small set of questions to be attempted alone before the next session). For the first few minutes of the next session we will go over those questions to see if there are anymore issues to be addressed. If the student wants help understanding some homework from school they were set or something we can absolutely do this however it would be useful to have some warning about this before the session so I can plan a useful session around it.

I expect a student to:
-attempt to be honest with what areas of maths they don't understand
-ask absolutely any questions they have
-attempt any work we agree they should try between sessions
-come to sessions ready to learn!

I expect a parent to:
-keep me informed with any concerns they have/changes to plans
-support and encourage their child in maths, no matter their ability

In exchange I promise to:
-be understanding and supportive with absolutely any maths issues a student has
-come to sessions prepared with activities
-review the success of different approaches of learning to find the best way to support the student
-keep lessons as engaging as possible

sorry for making this so long, just seems best to give you as much information as possible to help you choose a tutor. Feel free to message with any questions you might have.

the £9 an hour applies to online lessons however I won't count any time spent on internet/computer issues so no worries.
Due to the time I spend planning lessons, I ask for £4.50 if you cancel without at least a days notice to make up for the time (this doesn't apply to the first free session) but the earlier you let me know the better
