In my teaching, I have observed that many students find chemistry abstract because they cannot directly see the particles, bonds, or reactions that the subject describes. To overcome this challenge, I make my lessons hands-on, interactive, and relatable, ensuring that students connect theory with real-world experiences. I use simple experiments such as testing the pH of household items, weighing reactants and products during reactions, or modeling atoms and molecules with everyday materials. These activities not only spark curiosity but also make abstract concepts tangible. I also integrate interactive strategies like debates on issues such as plastic waste, role-playing to act out chemical reactions, and the use of digital simulations to visualize processes at the molecular level. These approaches bring chemistry alive and keep students engaged.
Equally important, my method is learner-focused, placing students at the center of the learning process. I encourage them to solve real-life problems using chemical principles, create concept maps to show how topics are connected, and teach each other in their own words to build confidence and mastery. Each lesson begins with a thought-provoking hook, flows into guided exploration, and ends with reflection and real-world application. This structure transforms students from passive listeners into active participants who can apply chemistry to their lives and future careers. My goal is to make chemistry not only understandable but also meaningful, inspiring students to see it as a subject that explains the world around them and equips them with critical thinking skills for life.
