About Ellen
I am currently a postgraduate student undertaking research in Psychology related to human learning. I have always been passionate about academia, as I believe knowledge is an essential part of our world. No knowledge in this world is useless—even if trigonometry formulas are seemingly useless in the real world, the knowledge of knowing how to apply one formula across a range of different problems is a skill that goes far in life. My aim as a teacher, then, is not merely to have students memorize how to calculate the volume of a sphere or how to multiply two matrices. Rather, I wish to hone their critical and creative thinking skills that allows a student to analyze a problem and devise a process which allows that problem to be answered. Not only will this make learning a much easier process, but also, it will be beneficial for their future across whatever industry they decide to undertake. I hope as well that by seeing learning in this light, it would become a fun experience rather than something they are forced to do just because they attend school.

I am flexible with my teaching methods, and am willing to teach lessons for a wide range of students. For primary school students, I will employ a more active method of teaching, including breaking down concepts accordingly in ways that the specific student may be more inclined to learn (i.e. using visual cards for certain students, oral cues for others). For secondary school students, I would expect questions regarding specific roadblocks that the student may be experiencing, as well as probe for holes in their knowledge, to ensure they understand what they are studying. I have had plenty of informal experience both in teaching primary school students, which I've done for social work, as well as secondary school students, which I do amongst my peers. As a teacher I strongly endorse practice as a form of furthering knowledge, so I will dedicate a good amount of time having students do practice questions or their homework. As such, a typical length of a tutoring session will take at least 1–2 hours, varying depending on the student's particular needs.
