About Oluwatosin

Over the years, teaching saxophone has allowed me to guide students through both the technical and expressive aspects of playing one of the most dynamic instruments in the world. I work with students across levels—from brand-new beginners to more experienced players seeking to refine their sound or explore new genres. My teaching philosophy is centered on balance: building solid technical foundations while nurturing each student’s personal connection to music.

In every lesson, I emphasize core saxophone fundamentals: proper breath control, embouchure formation, posture, hand positioning, and tone production. From the beginning, students learn not only how to produce a clean, consistent tone, but also how to shape and color their sound through dynamics and phrasing. I place special focus on intonation and articulation early on, as mastering these aspects leads to confident ensemble and solo playing.

Equally important is the creative side of music-making. I incorporate improvisation into lessons from an early stage—even simple call-and-response games or scale-based exploration—to help students become more musically fluent and expressive. Music theory is woven into lessons in a hands-on way, linked directly to what the student is playing. We use real music, not just exercises, to develop skills that are both practical and inspiring.

Students are encouraged to choose repertoire that excites them, whether that’s classical études, jazz standards, blues lines, or popular songs. This personalized approach increases motivation and ensures lessons remain relevant. I support each student in setting clear, achievable goals—such as preparing for a school performance, earning a spot in a regional band, or learning to play their favorite song by ear.

One of my most rewarding teaching moments was helping a shy beginner progress to confidently improvising over a 12-bar blues in just a few months. Witnessing their pride and transformation reminds me why I love teaching. My ultimate aim is to develop saxophonists who are not only technically capable, but also passionate, versatile, and expressive musicians.

My saxophone teaching philosophy centers around the belief that every student has a unique musical voice, and it’s my job to help them discover, refine, and express it. Learning saxophone should be structured, technically thorough, and deeply inspiring. I aim to provide a balance of discipline and creativity, where students not only master their instrument but also enjoy the process and feel personally connected to their growth.

From day one, I emphasize the fundamentals—posture, breath support, embouchure, tone production, finger technique, articulation, and rhythmic precision. These technical pillars are the bedrock of all great saxophone playing. However, I also understand that no two students learn the same way. That’s why I adapt every lesson to match individual learning styles, whether that means slowing down to reinforce core concepts or accelerating to challenge advanced players with complex repertoire and improvisation exercises.

I incorporate a variety of genres to keep lessons relevant and fun, from classical and jazz to pop, blues, and film scores. Students can expect to explore saxophone etudes, transcriptions, lead sheets, and full band arrangements, depending on their level and goals. For those interested in improvisation, I introduce scales, patterns, backing tracks, and ear training exercises to help students gain confidence in expressing themselves freely.

Technology is a powerful tool in my teaching. I utilize recording apps, tuners, metronomes, slow-down software, and digital sheet music to enhance practice and track progress. These tools also allow students to listen critically to their playing and develop self-awareness, which is crucial for long-term development.

One of my most memorable teaching experiences involved helping a teenage student prepare for a prestigious jazz competition. They started off unsure about their improvisation skills and stage presence. Through focused technical work, improvisation drills, performance coaching, and confidence-building exercises, they not only delivered an outstanding solo performance but also won an award and discovered a new passion for jazz. It was a powerful reminder of what dedicated mentorship can achieve.

Above all, I want my students to leave each lesson feeling proud of their progress, empowered to keep practicing, and excited about their musical journey. Whether their goal is to join a school band, perform on stage, or simply enjoy playing at home, I am committed to supporting every step of that journey with patience, enthusiasm, and professionalism.
