About Phil
As a teacher, I have over forty years of experience of teaching in several different areas. Throughout those years, I have had the privilege teaching many private students at all levels, helping them to reach their goals. Also, for twenty years, I taught instrumental music full time at the elementary - middle school levels
In addition to teaching music, I have tutored middle school aught many peopleath students, and have several years of substitute teaching at all levels and all subjects.
Musical Activities: I play percussion in our community band and a Civil War model brass band. I play fife in a fife and drum corps
Other areas of teaching experience: I am a commercial pilot and flight instructor, and aviation ground instructor, and have taught many people to become pilots.

Lessons start with some theory and a warm-up to review previously covered materials. Then, have the student play something he likes (and to test me to see how well I am getting the subject across.)
Then on to new material- I try to teach from the known to the the unknown, repeat the material several times to ensure that the student gets it. Then a short quiz to review the new stuff. Praise and encouragement are key to build confidence and to ensure student success
I require that the students devote at least twenty minutes daily for practice and require them to keep a practice log, signed weekly by a parent. i also encourage parents to sit ln on the lessons and closely supervise the practice sessions.
These lessons usually last 30-45minutes and are designed primarily for students up thru middle school, but the same format would apply to older student and adults
