About Emilia

Maths is one of my passions. I have been teaching Maths as a private tutor for more than 35 years. As a qualified Performing Arts teacher, I have also been teaching students with learning difficulties and disabilities in Further Education in London since 2006. All those experiences have allowed me to explore alternative teaching approaches that cater for all learning styles. I plan every lesson considering the student’s Individual needs and expectations.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have more than 35 years experience in teaching Performing Arts in Primary and Secondary Schools. Since moving to London in 1998, I have been teaching in Inclusive Learning (Further Education). My last position was Lecturer in the Inclusive Learning Department at the Ealing, West London & Hammersmith College, working with learners within the Autism Spectrum, Down Syndrome and PMLD.

In January 2023 I made the decision to work full time as a private tutor, dedicating myself to teaching Maths and English Language & Literature, as well as Portuguese. Since then, I’ve been mostly preparing students for the GCSEs and A-Levels in UK.

As a native Brazilian/Italian and qualified language teacher, I have been teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language in London since 1998. I have also been preparing students for the Portuguese GCSE and A-Level.

Before choosing to graduate in Performing Arts - Teaching Qualification - in Brazil, I had completed 3 years studying at the Faculty of Mathematics and Geology and at that time I started working as a Maths tutor, preparing students for the exams required to enter university. For that reason I’ve always felt confident teaching Maths.

Since moving to London, I have continued teaching Maths in private tuition. I have always felt very motivated to think out of the box while exploring the most effective teaching techniques for the different learning styles, in order to provide a unique experience for every one of my students.

Yes, I have an updated Enhanced DBS Certificate. I have the subscription to the DBS Online Update Service renewed every year.

About the lesson

I’m passionate about Maths! When I’m teaching this subject, my aim is to motivate the students to find and explore the fun in every activity - specially when they are preparing for their final exams - as it helps them to relax, this way improving their ability to focus. As a teacher, I try to think outside the box, planning every lesson according to my student’s preferences and learning style.

I am a qualified Performing Arts teacher who has also been teaching Maths in private tuitions for more than 35 years. I have also been teaching students with learning difficulties and disabilities in Further Education in London since 2006 and consider my experience as a Drama & Dance teacher very valuable while teaching Maths, as it allows me to explore alternative teaching approaches that cater for all learning styles.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

My specialist subjects as a private tutor are Maths and Portuguese (I’m native Brazilian). I also prepare students for the English Language and Literature and teach ESOL/English Functional Skills to adults.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING MODERN LANGUAGES (PORTUGUESE) TO ADULTS in London (2006), a CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH from the Cambridge University (since 2002), a CERTIFICATE FOR THE FOUNDATION COURSE IN PERFORMANCE STUDIES (DANCE PROGRAMME) from the Birkbeck College, University of London (2000) and a TEACHING QUALIFICATION IN PERFORMING ARTS from the Federal University of Rio Grande Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil (1992).

While studying at the Federal University of Rio Grande Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil I have also collaborated in the Research Project "THE USE OF CORPOREAL ENERGIES IN THE ACTING TRAINING", funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development / Ministry of Education and Culture (CNPq/MEC) - 1988-1992.

I attended the BA in Mathematics / BA in Geology during 3 years at the same University, before doing an internal transfer to Performing Arts in 1987.

- How much do you charge?

I usually charge £45 per hour/lesson for online teaching.

I offer the first 30 min lesson (a consultation and taster) - free of charge.

- Where do you teach?

At present moment I am only teaching online, usually on Zoom.

- When are you available?

I am now available during the day from Tuesday to Thursday and at after school times on Tuesday to Thursday. Saturday lessons can be arranged, depending on the time of year. I am also usually available during 3-4 weeks in the Summer break.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Maths: preparation for the GCSE and Functional Skills Levels 1 & 2 exams.

Portuguese: preparation for the GCSE and A-Level exams.

English Language and Literature: preparation for the GCSE and Functional Skills Levels 1 & 2 exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have been successfully using Zoom and could also use FaceTime or Skype for tutoring online, if that’s the student’s preference.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Your lessons will be planned specifically for you, according to your preferences and learning style. Together, we will find the best possible teaching approach that will make sure you are able to learn and revise for the exam/level you are aiming for.
