About Sam

My name is Sam, and I am a Year 13 student at Wellington College.

I enjoy helping others understand things I have already learned, especially in subjects where I have done well. Over time, I’ve found myself naturally explaining concepts to classmates and younger students in a way that makes things clearer and easier to understand.

I started tutoring because I understand how challenging NCEA can feel when you’re trying to improve your grades on your own. Having recently been through the system myself, I know what examiners are looking for and what actually makes a difference when aiming for Merit and Excellence.

In my lessons, I take a calm and patient approach. I don’t expect students to understand everything straight away, and I’m happy to explain things in different ways until they make sense. My focus is on making learning feel more manageable and less stressful, especially during exam periods.

Alongside school, I have worked at New World Wellington City in a fast-paced environment where I developed communication skills, responsibility, and confidence working with different people. This has helped me explain ideas more clearly and support students in a practical way.

Outside of tutoring and school, I like to stay active and spend time outdoors. I enjoy mountain biking, football, skiing, and going to the gym. I also enjoy spending time with friends and being in social environments, which has helped me become more confident communicating with different types of people.

Overall, I want to help students feel more confident in their ability to improve and achieve better results in a straightforward and supportive way.

My tutoring focuses on helping students understand how to get marks in NCEA, especially in exams and assessments. I don’t just go through content. I focus on how to turn it into clear, structured answers that meet the requirements for Merit and Excellence.

In lessons, I usually start by explaining the idea in a simple way. Then we work through examples together. After that, the student does questions on their own so I can see what they understand and what needs work. A big focus is exam technique, especially how to structure answers and how to understand what the question is asking. I also use past exam questions so students get used to the style of NCEA. When mistakes happen, I explain why they happened and how to fix them.

Most lessons are 60 minutes. That gives enough time to explain, practice, and go over feedback without rushing. Longer sessions can be used for revision or exam preparation if needed.

I am a Year 13 student with Excellence Endorsements in Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and English, and Merit Endorsements in French and History. I also achieved at Scholarship level in History. I don’t have formal teaching qualifications, but I have recently been through the NCEA system and understand what is needed to achieve high grades.

I also worked at New World Wellington City in a busy environment where I was given more responsibility over time. That helped me develop communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to explain things clearly to different people.

My lessons are mainly for NCEA Level 1-3 students in Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and English. I also tutor younger primary school students in math and basic literacy. With younger students, I focus on building confidence, clear foundations, and making learning simple and easy to follow.
