About Michael

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught all aspects of 11-18 Science very successfully in secondary schools for 28 years, working as Head of Biology and Head of Science. I have enjoyed helping over two hundred students as a one-to-one tutor in A-level Biology, IGCSE and GCSE Sciences since 1987(!). In all that time, I have learned a lot about good teaching and good learning.

I am a fully qualified Science teacher, with three decades of successful classroom experience. Helping students build their understanding of Science is my life's work.

- How much do you charge?

£39 per hour one-to-one.
£45 per hour for online tuition.
My fees include an unlimited "email helpline" between sessions (through a parental account). Why be baffled for hours when we could sort it out in a couple of minutes?
45p/mile travelling expenses.

Shared tuition is £22.50 per hour per person. This is for a maximum of two students.

- Where do you teach?

At your home, provided you live within West Bridgford or Ruddington.
Travelling outside West Bridgford is rare, but negotiable.

I have a teaching room at our home, with a comfy "parent's corner" equipped with wifi and good coffee.

For child protection reasons, for students younger than eighteen there must be another responsible adult present, either somewhere in your home, or in my teaching room.

- When are you available?

10:00am to 7:45pm Monday to Wednesday.
10:00am to 6:30pm Sundays.

I teach students from Year 7 upwards.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have taught online since the beginning of 2013, giving 660 lessons to date.( I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised by how effective - and friendly - it can be.)
I use a well-known online platform, as well as Skype and Scribblar.
Please give me 24 hours notice of what you would like to cover, as good online learning needs particularly careful preparation.
I have developed a useful range of resources which I will tailor to your particular needs. Also, I have the online teaching experience to be pretty handy with resources, so when a lesson needs to change direction, we do it smoothly.
Please note my fee for online tuition is £45 per hour.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

As an expert tutor, I will guide you in building up your understanding of Science, so that you make your own sensible "story" rather than feeling you are carrying a collection of random, unrelated facts.

Exams don't have to be a trial. I will coach you in exam techniques so that you understand what a question is asking you to do, and can tackle it with real confidence.

In our sessions, most of the talking should be yours: explaining something for yourself is a powerful and effective way to learn. I'm still surprised at how much laughter there is, too!

Good tuition is good value for money. Every session with me is planned to bring a solid, identifiable gain in your performance.
