About Tomonori
I’m a maths and Japanese tutor who loves making learning clear, encouraging, and a bit fun. Although I have an elite academic and professional background—including ranking top 300 out of 2 million students in maths in Japan—I warmly welcome any level of student, from primary school children to adults, and from any cultural background.
Outside teaching, I’m a puzzle and music nerd: I solve 10×10×10 Rubik’s Cubes for fun, play classical piano to unwind, and keep myself strong in the gym. I’m 52 and can still bench-press 120kg, which usually surprises people almost as much as my enthusiasm for tricky maths problems.

I take a structured, student-centred approach to tutoring. My lessons focus on building strong foundations, developing clear problem-solving strategies, and increasing confidence through guided practice. I break complex ideas into simple, logical steps and use real-world examples from my background as a finance specialist and Kyoto University MSc Engineering graduate to make concepts meaningful and memorable.
For Maths, I emphasise understanding over memorisation. Students learn how to recognise patterns, apply methods efficiently, and explain their reasoning. For Japanese, I combine structured grammar instruction with natural conversation practice to help learners progress quickly and confidently.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although I also offer 45-minute sessions for younger 11+ students who benefit from shorter, focused teaching. Every lesson includes a quick review of previous material, step-by-step teaching of new concepts, and targeted practice to reinforce learning. I provide optional homework and feedback to support steady progress.
I have 20 years of professional experience in finance, eight years teaching advanced mathematics in Japan, and extensive experience tutoring 11+, GCSE, A-Level Maths, and Japanese. My lessons are suitable for students aged 8 to 18, from those preparing for selective school entrance exams to those aiming for top grades at GCSE and A-Level.
