About Benjamin
When math is made to seem like it’s only about solving long equations and digesting unrealistic word problems, it’s understandable that it’s not easy to hold onto. The little-known fact of the matter is that *math doesn’t have to feel that way!* In our sessions, I hope to be able to share the joy of doing math with you, so that you walk away from our time together feeling less like math is a chore, and more like you are capable of solving tough problems on your own. Lastly, as a lifelong student of mathematics myself, I know the importance of an inclusive, failure-tolerant instructional environment in the process of learning difficult math— I’ve worked hard to build those spaces in my teaching experiences, and I’ll work hard to build one with you.

I approach tutoring in mathematics with an enthusiastic attitude rooted in curiosity and wonder. My sessions are oriented around worked examples, small group work (when possible), and socratic-style questioning. I’ve refined this technique in my experience hosting help sessions as a teaching assistant. Additionally, as a homework grader, I have learned to readily identify and reshape misconceptions. While I have the most experience catering sessions to undergraduate students, I am also very comfortable working with each student’s personal needs and background to build lessons that work for them (and, also, to build the personal connection needed to make learning math fun!).

Details
My rate starts at $25/hour for virtual sessions, and $30/hour for in-person sessions. However, working in groups can be an invaluable tool in learning mathematics, and I try to encourage collaborative problem-solving when possible. For sessions with two folks, my virtual rate is $18/hour per person and my in-person rate is $23/hour per person. For sessions with three or four folks, my virtual rate is $15/hour per person and my in-person rate is $20/hour per person. Sessions with more than four folks are considered on a case-by-case basis.
