About Sarah

Outside of tutoring, I still pursue astrophysics as this is a lifelong passion of mine. My love for science and maths runs very deep and this is something I always like to try to pass on to my students. I have studied all over the world - Harvard Centre for Astrophysics in New England; The Australian Astronomical Observatory just outside Sydney and, of course, here in the UK at Southampton and Oxford. One thing I have picked up along the way is a lot of perspective and so I encourage my students to work hard – as hard as they can – because there are so many opportunities out there for young people if they are prepared to strive. To me it’s all about finding out what the student is passionate about and then helping them work towards it. Or, if they don’t yet know, helping them find that thing that makes them really want to work to get it. It’s all about getting the students I work with to want to do their best, for them, to fulfil their own goals. Once a student feels self-driven then all I have to do is teach them the content and the skills, then support their work. I’ve spent the last 12 years perfecting this process.

About the lesson

I have over a decade of experience teaching Maths from KS2 to A-level and a 1st class Hons Degree in Astrophysics. I've studied at Southampton, Harvard and Oxford. I began teaching as a Postgrad at Oxford. My approach is tailored to each student I meet in order to help them gain confidence and practise their skills to the best of their ability. I've worked with a really wide range of students, including those with dyscalculia and other learning barriers, and those with severe mental health challenges. I myself am dyslexic, so I have a lot of empathy for students with different learning styles. I know when it is important to push a student to help them achieve more, but also when to recognise that they are already doing their best and just need encouragement and support as they learn. In the last three years I have been teaching almost exclusively online and have mastered delivering online lessons in an engaging and interactive manner that adds the same, if not more, value in comparison to in person lessons. Overall, I hope that I make learning more interesting and enjoyable for my students. I certainly try to make lessons as pain free as possible – after all, it never hurts to smile.
