About Toby

Hi, I’m Toby! I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but funnily enough, I never thought it would be for math—until I had a great teacher who completely changed my perspective. I know what it’s like to struggle with math, and that’s why I’m passionate about helping others find the right approach that makes it click. Over the years, I’ve learned from amazing teachers and studied on my own to better understand and explain math concepts. I also love meeting new people and making learning an engaging and positive experience. I currently attend high school in the Stafford/Spotsylvania, Virginia area and have a flexible schedule for tutoring. Whether you need help breaking down tough problems or just want extra practice, I’m here to help!

Lesson Structure Getting to know the student, (5-10 minutes) -Introduce myself and create a comfortable learning environment -Ask about the student's experience with math (strengths, struggles, and goals). -Identify their preferred learning style (visual, hands-on, step-by-step explanations, etc.). -Discuss any specific topics or problems they need help with Concept review explanation (15-20 minutes) -Introduce the topic or problem in a way that matches their learning style -Break down concepts into clear, easy-to-follow steps. -Use examples that relate to their interests or real-life applications when possible. Guided practice (15-20 minutes) -Walk through example problems together, explaining each step. -Encourage the student to ask questions and verbalize their thought process. -Provide tips and alternative approaches to solving problems. Independent practice (10-15 minutes) -Give the student time to work through problems on their own. -Observe their approach and provide guidance as needed. -Reinforce problem-solving strategies and build confidence. Review and Wrap-Up (5-10 minutes) -Go over key takeaways from the session. -Address any lingering questions or areas of confusion. -Set goals for the next session and suggest practice problems if needed. -End on a positive note to encourage confidence and motivation Adjustments: -If the student needs more time on a topic, extend the explanation and guided practice. -If they grasp concepts quickly, introduce more challenging problems or real-world applications -Adapt teaching methods based on their feedback and progress. Prices can vary, I’m happy to talk it out. I also cannot change the settings to only “public place”. I am currently only able to meet at preferred public libraries. I am happy to request a private room at the library for each session.
