About Amy

I first began tutoring when I was recruited by the math department at my community college as soon as I started college, and I have been teaching or tutoring ever since — more than 20 years of experience. Sometimes it was my full-time work while I was a student myself, and other times I fit it in on weekends while pursuing roles in research and industry, but tutoring has always been something I enjoy and make time for. This has been the most fulfilling work of my career. When I was tutoring in person, I often met students in their homes, schools, or local cafés, filling my calendar through word-of-mouth requests and a reputation for results. I worked closely with both students and their parents, focusing not just on success in math but also on building skills and confidence that helped them thrive in school and beyond. Now that I am both a parent and a homeschooling parent, as well as the founder of a company built around a patent-pending algorithm that started as a simple homework assignment, I choose to tutor online. Teaching virtually allows me to maximize the number of students I can help while balancing my family life and entrepreneurial work. — Amy

About the lesson

My number one goal is for students to feel good about math class and earn the best grade they can — without the stress. I’m not there to give another lecture. Instead, I guide students as they work through problems, explaining each step so we can pinpoint exactly where confusion begins and what past skills may need review. Most of my students discover that filling in old gaps is the key to succeeding in today’s lessons. Beyond that, I teach students how to learn math, not just how to finish homework. I show them how to use resources like textbooks, class notes, and online tools to work more effectively and navigate their course with confidence. I also provide study strategies, test-taking tips, and ways to work with their teachers to maximize success. I bring humor and encouragement to my sessions, and many parents have shared that their kids actually enjoy our time together (and see results). Over the years I’ve worked with students of all kinds — from those with ADD, dyscalculia, or executive functioning challenges to high-achievers who just need a push. My students and their families often stay in touch long after tutoring ends, which is something I’m proud of. — Amy
