About Alexander
I'm Alexander. I teach maths online: GCSE, the Buckinghamshire Transfer Test, and A-level.
Most students I work with aren't bad at maths. What's usually missing is practice at the right things, and a method they can rely on when it counts. Both of those are fixable.
I'm friendly, but I'm direct and I'm here to get results. I'll tell you plainly what I think is going wrong and what we're going to do about it, and if I don't think I'm the right fit for your child, I'll say so.
On paper: I'm a maths undergraduate at the University of Bath. At A-level I got an A* in Maths at around 96%, including 50 out of 50 on mechanics and 49 out of 50 on statistics, plus an A in Further Maths. At GCSE, grade 9s in Maths and Further Maths. The useful part isn't the marks themselves. It's that I sat these papers recently, under the same specification your child is being taught, so I know which topics actually catch people out.

Sixty minutes, online, on a shared whiteboard so we're both writing rather than me talking at a screen.
The first session is a diagnostic: I find what's actually missing instead of assuming. After that, each session starts with retrieval, recalling last week from memory rather than me re-explaining, then a concept explained, a worked example, a faded example, then you working alone. I don't jump straight to "now you try".
An hour a week on its own only goes so far. I set homework every week: a short, targeted set based on what we found that session, not busywork. I mark it properly, and we go back over anything that went wrong so you can see where the reasoning broke rather than just what the right answer was.
If you'd like one, I'll send a short note after every session: what we covered, how it went, what's next.

Excellent tutoring for GCSE maths, Alexander was knowledgeable, patient and practical, providing clear explanations in an engaging and simple way. He was also very flexible both in timing of sessions but also in content, focusing where needed on areas of difficulty. Highly recommended.
Alexander tutored 11+, now helping preparing my son for year 7. Patient, thoughtful, supportive. Gets results. Couldn’t ask for a better tutor.
I was held back a year due to illness. I came across him through a friend’s recommendation. His style of teaching is really refreshing compared to those I’ve come across before. Engaging but without sacrificing on the quality of content, his sessions helped me understand many areas of alevel maths better. We focused on my weaker topics which clicked in a way I wasn’t expecting, building every week gave me a sense of accomplishment I wasn’t used to with maths. I highly recommend to any student!

Details
The first 30 minutes are free, and I use them as a diagnostic. You tell me what's going wrong, I find where the marks are actually going, and I tell you honestly whether I'm the right person for it.
GCSE maths is my main focus: all exam boards, foundation and higher. I'm happy to advise on tier, which is the biggest decision in GCSE maths. I also teach A-level maths and the Buckinghamshire Transfer Test.
Rates: £30/hr for GCSE and 11+, £40/hr for A-level. Packs: 5 hours £140, 10 hours £260.
Some students need exam technique and method drilling because the exam is close. Others have time to understand why the maths works, which is what makes it stick. I'll tell you which one your child needs after the first session.
