About Alexander
I'm Alexander, a mathematics undergraduate at the University of Bath, and I teach maths online — the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test, GCSE, and A-level.
Most children who struggle with maths aren't bad at it. They've got one specific gap a few years back that never got filled, and everything built on top of it feels unstable. My first job is finding that gap, which is why I start with a diagnostic rather than a syllabus.
For the Bucks test: it's on 8 and 10 September, set by GL Assessment for The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools. Paper 2 is the maths, non-verbal and spatial reasoning paper. Non-verbal reasoning isn't taught in primary school at all — which is exactly why it's so hard to help with at home, and also why it's the most trainable part in a short window.
Being a maths undergraduate matters more than it sounds. I sat GCSE and A-level under the current specifications recently, so I know which topics actually catch people out rather than which ones a textbook says are hard. And most 11+ tutors are English or primary generalists — a mathematician teaching the maths paper is a different proposition.
I'm patient, I don't rush, and I'd rather one idea landed properly than five being covered. If I don't think I'm the right fit for your child, I'll say so.

Sixty minutes, online, with a shared whiteboard so we're both writing rather than me talking at a screen.
First session is a diagnostic - I find what's actually missing rather than assuming. Every session after that starts with retrieval: recalling last week from memory rather than me re-explaining. Then some teaching and explaining a concept followed by a worked example, then a faded one, then independent practice - I don't jump straight to "now you try". And you get a short note after every session: what we did, how it went, what's next.

Excellent tutoring for GCSE maths, Alexander was knowledgeable, patient and practical, providing clear explanations in an engaging and simple way. He was also very flexible both in timing of sessions but also in content, focusing where needed on areas of difficulty. Highly recommended.
Alexander tutored 11+, now helping preparing my son for year 7. Patient, thoughtful, supportive. Gets results. Couldn’t ask for a better tutor.
I was held back a year due to illness. I came across him through a friend’s recommendation. His style of teaching is really refreshing compared to those I’ve come across before. Engaging but without sacrificing on the quality of content, his sessions helped me understand many areas of alevel maths better. We focused on my weaker topics which clicked in a way I wasn’t expecting, building every week gave me a sense of accomplishment I wasn’t used to with maths. I highly recommend to any student!

Details
First lesson is free, and it's a diagnostic — I find out where the marks are actually going before I teach anything. You get a short written summary of what I find.
GCSE maths is my main focus: all exam boards, foundation and higher. Happy to advise on which tier — it's the biggest decision in GCSE maths. I also teach A-level maths and the Buckinghamshire Transfer Test.
After every session I send a short note: what we covered, how it went, what's next.
Packs available — 5 hours £140, 10 hours £260. Free 15-minute call first if you'd rather talk before booking anything.
Some students need exam technique and method drilling because the exam is close. Others have time to understand why the maths works, which is what makes it stick. I'll tell you honestly which one your child needs after the first lesson.
