About Caleb
Hi! I’m Caleb. I’m 26 and I am currently traveling around Europe learning all about some of the world's wonderful cultures. Until recently had been teaching at a wonderful primary school in Auckland for three years and (including relief teaching) have worked with students from year 0 all the way up to year 13. My experience working in education has shown me that at the core of all effective teaching is a strong relationship built on respect and understanding. What can you expect from me? I value every single one of my students and aim to provide lessons that are engaging and tailored to their personal strengths and interests. In order to continue to provide the most effective ongoing support, I aim to keep in contact with whānau to develop learning goals based on current or upcoming curriculum topics in school.

“What should I expect in the first lesson?” The goal of the first session is for me as the tutor to get to know the student, their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. I will usually ask a few questions and set a small assessment(s) to show me where the learner stands in our chosen area of learning. “What can I expect from a typical lesson?” A typical lesson will begin with either an open-ended problem or problem-solving task as a starter activity. This helps the learner to warm up their “math brains” and helps me to keep track of what topics / strategies they are succeeding at or need more support in. After this, we will focus on a specific topic which needs work which would be determined by current school topics, areas I have identified, and ultimately through conversations between myself and you as the parents. During this time there will be a period of direct teaching followed by a period of practice which can be repeated if time allows. At the end of the session, we will take time to reflect on and recap what we have learned.
