About Tom
Coming from a working-class background in an area of low aspiration, and then going on to attend a Russell group University, and now working in a multinational leading finance organisation, I’ve had the benefit of working with individuals from a wide range of academic abilities. This has given me a deep insight into how different demographics think, learn and absorb information. I currently now work as an actuarial consultant in the pensions industry, and perhaps the most critical skill that actuaries require is the ability to convey complex and technical information in a way that is digestible and easy to understand for the audience. This career choice was fairly easy for me as I knew that I always had a passion for teaching and training, hence why I chose to do a PGCE in Secondary School Mathematics immediately after graduating with a first class honours mathematics degree. Although I chose not to teach full-time, it was incredibly important to me that I continue to use my skills of training and now I am in the right place in my life to begin tutoring others who wish to advance to the next stage in their academic career.

Those who know me would probably use the words enthusiastic, animated and fun. This is exactly what carries over into my teaching style. Mathematics may not have the glamour of other subjects but learning can (and should) always be an enjoyable process. Once a student has appreciated the joy of learning then they will become much more engaged in their academic journey. I am a very visual teacher, as I believe in developing conceptual understanding and do not believe in memorising or excessive rote learning. My lessons are based on short snappy concepts with a wealth of questioning and self-checking to ensure my tutees can play back and demonstrate their understanding to me.
