About Jax

i've been playing ukulele for nearly 4 1/2 years. i've also been singing both in choirs and at home for 8 years.

i'm left handed, but i don't play on a left handed ukulele. which means i know how to work a standard-strung ukulele, but i can teach both left and right handed people. + i know how to work a left handed ukulele, if that's more your style!

as far as singing goes, i've had voice lessons since i was 8 years old. i know the ins and outs of singing, and i can help you learn them, too!

i've been writing songs since i was 13, so about 3 years now. i've always had a knack for words and rhyming, and since poetry was already a big hobby of mine, it wasn't hard to mix it with my music! if songwriting is something you're passionate about, but you can't quite figure it out, i can totally assist you in writing the perfect song!

ukulele and singing/songwriting are all big sources of comfort for me. most of my family is pretty musical, especially my dad. it's something we can easily bond over, which means a lot to me. otherwise though, it's something i can do without having to worry about being the best, or sounding good, or anything. it's what i do to relieve my stress and worries.

About the lesson

for ukulele players, i'll start with asking you how much you already know, and then we can go from there. if you don't know anything, i'll start by teaching you how the actual ukulele is built, how frets and notes work, and how to tune it properly. then we'll jump right into some chords! i'll ask you if theres a song you'd like to learn, but if we can't find one that's easy, i'll let you pick from a list of beginner pieces. and before you know it, you'll have learned your first song!

for people who want to get into songwriting, i'll ask if you've written songs before. if you have, we can either rework your premade songs, or we can start from scratch. typically we'll go with a topic you have in mind, but there's always room to brainstorm themes if you don't already know what it is you'd like to write about.
the songwriting process is different for everyone, so if the way i do it doesn't work for you, that's totally okay! i'm there to help you figure out how you write songs, after all.

and for aspiring singers, i'll start by asking you to sing your favourite song (or whatever song you feel brings out your voice the best). that will help me gage how much you can do naturally, and what you might need some extra help with. i'll teach you some warm up exercises, and then we can hop right into some scales. after that, we'll start working on technique, and try to find your personal style. there's no wrong way to sing!

i typically charge 20 bucks an hour, but i'm flexible on price! i'm always open to working with your budget with a payment plan or by just giving you a discount.
