About Suné

I have loved music since I am able to remember. Music has always been very important in me and my family's lives and it has always been my dream to have a career in music. Thanks to my family's support and my own hard work, my dream has come true and grows bigger by the day. I would love to help others reach their musical dream. I took part in all the musical theater plays during my primary and high school years. I also sang choir for 12 years and took part in eisteddfods every year. During my 4 years of undergraduate university (UCT), I was in all of The South African College of Music's productions, including the operas collaborating with Artscape. I took part in several concerts that were all performed at The Baxter Theatre. Each day I am still training my own voice and it is still growing stronger with time. Music is my life.

Allow me to help you improve your musical skills. Together we'll show everyone out there that it takes both talent and hard work to reach your goals. I will show you how to use your whole body for singing to reach maximum results. We will warm up and cool down in every lesson, because the vocal chords are just like any other muscle in the body. Just like any other muscle it needs proper training and can get injured when overworked. I have some very fun techniques that makes singing exercises more interesting and show results. We will explore your voice type and range to discover the correct repertoire for you. I am able to teach in English and Afrikaans. I can teach all levels of singing, whether you are just starting out or have been singing for a while. Music is endless and timeless and I am excited to teach others what I know.

  • When did you develop an interest in music and/or your favourite instrument?

I grew up in a very musical family. Both my grandmothers were music teachers, so I was raised with music always surrounding me. Me and my family have always been singing together. I think it is safe to say I have loved music and singing since I was old enough to realise it.
  • Is there a particular type of music or an artist that you could happily listen to on a loop?

I have always loved and appreciated all types of music. I believe there is a time and place for every genre, but I particularly enjoy indie-pop and indie-rock music on a daily basis. It is in my opinion the most diverse and always puts me in a good mood. "Clairo" and "Nothing But Thieves" are two of my favourites. I also have a big passion for lyrics, which is what I admire of them.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

One of the most difficult, but also riveting, lessons I could personally give to a student is when I have to teach them how to sing on pitch and how to find the specific notes. I know that it must be so frustrating for someone who is tone deaf to want to sing, but not be able to always hit the right notes. It takes a long time and it can get very frustrating for the student, but if they push through and continue to work with me it is so rewarding. They will get better and better until they are eventually able to sing on pitch and stay on key.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think the voice is the most complicated instrument to master. I believe this, because there are so many factors that have an influence in singing. You have to use your whole body to sing. Posture, tension, injuries, health and stress all play a role in the sound you produce. One also have to take in account that every single person has a different voice. Everyone has a different range and style to their voice. In a sense you also have to be fit to sustain long notes or sing quickly. With that being said, not everyone are able to sing in tune and on rhythm as easily as someone who would, for example, learn how to play the piano or guitar.
  • What are your keys to success (aside from do re mi fa so la ti...)?

My keys to success is treating my instrument with honour and respect and never taking it for granted. I always warm up properly and have a cup of black rooibos tea with honey before singing. I drink at least two litres of water daily and I make sure to have at least eight hours of sleep every night. During winters I make sure to always keep a scarf nearby.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting, and explain why.

I dream of meeting Whitney Houston, because I would love to hear her sing in person. She has such incredible range. She makes it sound so effortless to reach those high and low notes. She is also able to sing in do many different styles. Her voice simply always sounds so powerful, regardless if she's singing soft, warm, belting or operatic. I aspire to meet Julie Andrews, because she is also one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with music. "The Sound of Music" is the first musical I ever watched both on television and live. I have so many questions for her and I imagine that having a conversation with her would be one of the most fulfilling things in life. And finally, as cliché as it might sound, I would also love to meet Taylor Swift purely for the fact of finding out how she managed to become a billionaire at such a young age just through songwriting and performing. I would also be interested in hearing how she deals with being so extremely famous and how it affects her daily life.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your musical journey or your student days?

Don't be too hard on yourself. Always work hard, yes, but never overwork. Every day is not going to be the same, you will have good days and bad days and that is ok. Sometimes you will get frustrated, because it does not feel or sound like your voice is where you want it to be, but do not be discouraged by this. Keep a good balance between business and pleasure. There is a time to have fun, a time to rest and a time to work. Once you have managed to accordingly divide your time, you will get through anything.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I see myself as a Superprof in music, because of my deep passion and endless love for music. The fact that I grew up in a musical family and have always been certain that I will pursue a career in music motivated me to work hard towards my goals. Gaining experience from choirs, musicals and operas have also helped me to improve.
