About Jay

I'm a friendly, approachable and engaging tutor with a background in mathematics. I have 10+ years of teaching experience along with 3+ years of tutoring, all in Minnesota. I typically teach Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II but I've tutored various elementary and middle school students as well.

I strive to help students achieve their full potential by encouraging student learning through various teaching methods and strategies while working in a stress-free and safe environment. I tailor each session to the needs of the student, building a strong rapport along the way.

It's always a great feeling seeing the light bulb go off in a students' head when they finally grasp a concept they've been having difficulty with. It's a feeling that makes me proud to do what I do.

I also enjoy building rapport with my students. Whether it's small talk in the hallways, cafeteria or in the classroom, getting to know my students is vital to their success.

After I received my mathematics degree, I didn't quite know what I wanted to do with it. So, while I was looking for jobs, I became a substitute teacher and also began tutoring. I immediately felt a sense of joy and pride working with the students and knew what I wanted my future career to be. I then went to graduate school and obtained my teaching license in mathematics.

I have been a high school math teacher for 10+ years. I typically teach Algebra 1 and Geometry. Occasionally I teach Algebra II. I also have experience teaching some 7-8 grade courses as well.

I have also been a 1-on-1 math tutor for 3+ years. I either met with the students at their home (with parent supervision) or at the public library. The age range for these students was ten to eighteen.

I like to spend a few minutes to get to know the student and to build a little bit of a rapport. From there, I tend to see where their ability level is and what their strengths and weakness are. I tend to work on improving any weaknesses they may have while also sticking to their strenghts. Everyone learns differently and I try my best to show students their true potential.

I mainly work with high school students, but I've taught and tutored middle school students as well. I've also tutored a few elementary school students.

I would look for a tutor that is willing to work with you. One who is willing to show you multiple ways to arrive at the same solution. One who adapts to you. One that has a good rapport and makes the learning fun and enjoyable.

I'm a big fan of Bob Ross and would occasionally put up one of his videos in my classroom before the school day began. It became popular with my students. A few of them even went out of their way and bought me a giant Bob Ross cutout, some Bob Ross socks and a Bob Ross Chia Pet. It was a moment I'll always cherish.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If they need help with a math problem, they should ask themselves if they're having trouble interpreting the problem itself or if they don't understand the concept in general. Sometimes there's more than one way to solve a problem as well, so they should think about another possible way of getting through the problem or asking about another way.
