About Brenda

Personalization, connection, guidance, serious-learning through fun and visual methods.

Many students don't like math, think it's too hard, or that they just can't do it. I have years of experience turning that around. I love tricks. I love logic. I love making math easy with clear steps, and visual explanations. I recognize that each student has their own way of learning and I meet them where they're at. The best thing is when a math-hater begins to enjoy math and recognizes that they can.

I also enjoy working with gifted students who want to understand math more deeply, go further with it, and move ahead at their own pace.

I have over 20 years of online and in-person teaching/tutoring experience working with students of all ages.

I currently teach online only using Google Meet.

I started teaching my younger brother the day I started kindergarten! In elementary school, sometimes my teachers asked me to help other kids. In high school, I had a job, during school, to tutor some kids in the elementary school next door. Then, I started tutoring my boss to help her pass the Math GREs.

In college, I studied Education and Computer Science.

Even after graduating and starting a software engineering career, I always found opportunities to teach something... like computers, swimming, skiing, you name it. I taught adult university computer classes which led to teaching online classes.

Now, living in Costa Rica since 2001, I have taught Math and Computers at brick-and-mortar schools, as well as tutoring Math and ESL online.

I currently focus on tutoring Math online.

I have tutored since I was in high school. I have taught at brick-and-mortar schools and tutored online and in person. I've been teaching/tutoring online for over 20 years.

I have a Master's degree in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. I also studied Education in college.

I like to connect with the student; getting to know their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, in life and in math. We often start with homework or test prep questions to assess where to begin.

As needed, we may spend a portion of each class building weak general math skills or advancing known skills to the next level, such as working on screen/paper or using mental math instead of a calculator.

***Before our first meeting, if possible, it would be very helpful to see the Table of Contents of my student's relevant schoolbook and examine past exams and homework.

I have worked with students of all ages, all abilities, and many different nationalities including struggling students and gifted students.

Find someone who you feel like you can connect with, who challenges you to solve the problem by guiding you with questions and giving you just enough new information, rather than someone who just tells you what to do or gives you the answers.

I love kayaking. Recently, I went on a kayaking trip to an island with some friends. We didn't realize that at low tide the canal we needed to access wasn't accessible. We ended up in knee-deep mud, hauling our kayaks to the shore and then to water. It was hard work and very messy, but I loved the challenge.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I want tutoring?

What are my goals?

What am I good at?

Where do I struggle?

How do I feel about Math?

Is there anything I can tell my tutor about myself that will help us work together successfully?
