About Olliander

I seek to provide accessible services for student of all ages and abilities. Between my time in University and living in Hawai'i, I have gained experience working with a diverse group of people to achieve research or learning objectives. I hope to facilitate learning in a student led environment.

I enjoy watching students grow in confidence in subjects they do not see themselves doing well in. I believe every student can achieve their goals as long as they learn the techniques that can help them get there.

My high school English teacher inspired me to be a teacher that is willing to actively listen and help a student excel. As I completed my BS and MS degrees and gained more experience, I picked up techniques that helped myself and my students become more engaged students.

I have completed my Masters of Geology and Geophysics in the Volcanology, Geochemistry, Petrology department at University of Hawaii Manoa. I have also completed a Bachelor of Sciene in Geology at Florida State University. In my time at University, I have instructed several Geology Introduction Lab sections as well as held tutoring sessions for a range of subjects.

About the lesson

Before any tutoring can begin, we must first develop a plan that includes student goals, past achievements, and current strengths. We do not want to focus on large scale goals (since this can worsen the overwhelmed feeling), but instead smaller, segmented goals that work towards the larger goal.

I have worked with students aged 8 to 67 years old. My students have been from a dynamic range of backgrounds and experience levels.

As a student, it is important to find a teacher that will listen and do their best to alleviate the stresses associated with classes. Being in school is quite difficult and frustrating and your instructor's job is to figure out tactics for you to manage that stress and excel.

I recently had the opportunity to study volcanology in the mount Shasta region. The area is such a geologic oddity in that pumice and obsidian coexist within the same rock unit! Well that and California is such a beautiful place to spend time outdoors studying something that complexes you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my goals; long term and short term?
What about this subject is difficult for me?
what about this subject is easy for me?
