About Allison

I have been tutoring middle and high school students for a few years now. I currently have a master's degree and am a medical student, and my passion for education has given me a passion for helping students learn. With each session, I get to know the student. I make an effort to understand how the he or she learns and any potential barriers. Then, we address those barriers as a team. I provide a safe space in which we address both academic success and concerns, and can freely ask questions.

I began teaching on a one-on-one basis with students a few years ago, and absolutely fell in love with it. I love connecting with students and seeing them thrive with an individualized learning experience!

I have completed a master's degree and am currently a medical student, which provides extensive baseline knowledge of both academic material itself, as well as the process by which one academically succeeds. I began tutoring middle and high school students a few years ago, and I have developed a method that is based on experience and the success of my past students.

Typically, I spend a few minutes getting to know the student-- learning styles, past successes, past struggles, etc. Then, I formulate a personalized lesson plan that takes all of these factors into account, and we take material step by step. I always make sure we get the foundational concepts of a subject mastered before moving forward, and use several markers of success (quizzes, dialoge with the student, etc.). This ensures that the student has an understanding of the material. I have had tremendous success using this method with all of my previous students, and have seen positive growth in my students, both personally and academically.

I have worked with middle and high school students of all levels. For example, I've worked with students that struggle with ADHD, students that struggle with the environment at school and need specific learning strategies, students that struggle in general with academia, and those who are trying to prepare for a test (ACT/SAT) or tackle a specific subject.

The first thing I always tell my students:

"This is a safe space. Please, ask questions! There is no need to worry about being wrong-- I am here to help you learn, and by asking questions, you help me to understand your thought process. This allows me to come up with unique ways to explain things that might make more sense."

My biggest piece of advice: ensure the learning environment is flexible, accomodating, and a safe space to ask questions.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There are so many things that might be the root cause of the student's struggles academically. Some patterns and factors (that I've personally observed over the years) that influence academic success:

-Classroom environment (i.e. too many distractions, too fast-paced)

-Difficulty of material (sometimes it just means using a different teaching method that works better for the individual student)

-Organizational skills, time management

-Study strategies (i.e. reading material to learn it vs. practice problems, auditory/visual learning)
