About PAUL

I've worked with middle schoolers and high schoolers as a peer tutor for over 3 years! I understand that when students struggle with a problem, they may just have a few wholes in their foundation. I've worked to recognize how to find those problems and explain them comprehensively. I also understand that students don't always have the time or stamina to sit down for extended periods of time. I always cater to the student's pace and make sure that everything is put in the simplest terms possible.

Believe it or not, I like math! To me, math is all about explaining a problem. When I help students, I discover something new, and to me, that is a great feeling.

I started teaching as a peer tutor in highschool. In other words, I was proficient enough as a student to be a part of a program that helps other students.

I am a junior at Barrett, the Honors College within ASU. I am studying electrical engineering, so I am constantly dealing with math. In terms of tutoring, I've tutored as a peer tutor for around 3 years, which means I can easily recognize what are foundational problems and how to address them effectively.

I ask what concepts he/she is struggling with. Are the questions in particular he/she has trouble with? How long has he/she been struggling with this concept? This gives me a general idea of where the student is in the material as well as the level of difficulty the student has been having with the material. I then work out foundational example problems for the student and reintegrate them back into problematic material.

I've worked with everyone from private middle schoolers, orphaned high schoolers, students struggling with english, even students struggling to see the point to math! Teaching so many demographics has taught me how to listen and focus in on students' singular needs.

As someone who has needed tutors before, finding a tutor who listens is very important. I've had so many tutors that will only work at the surface level or won't engage the student properly, leaving the student with a great comprehension during the tutoring session, but struggling at home. This is because some tutors will simply do the homework for students.

Stay away from tutors who do not invest in the student.

I've had to deal with medical surgeries that have inhibited the progression of my college education. Having to drop classes to make room for recovery was one of those roadblocks. Studying at home, alone, and successfully testing out of physics and math courses has reminded me of my passion for this line of work/

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I like to give my phone number to my students. Conversation is always a key element to comprehensive education. I ask my students to answer these questions before every class:

"What am I struggling with?"

"When I approach a problem, where do I get stuck?"

"If I don't get stuck, but simply derive the wrong answer, have I tried breaking down the problem into more simpler terms? does that help?"
