About Gavin

I am a computer science and finance student at the Univeristy of Waterloo. I've consistently had high math marks and used to tutor during high school. I also worked as a swim instructor for over 3 years so my teaching abilities along with my math skills are both things I am confident in. My math marks in grade 12 were 100% in calculus, 99% in advanced functions, and 97% in data science.

I love seeing students have the "aha" moment while learning new concepts and/or answering complex problems.

I always liked helping others improve as I believe every individual has the potential to do well given the proper circumstances. I find it quite the shame when people say they aren't "cut out" for math when in reality the way their teacher's are teaching them might not be the style that's best suited for them.

I've been a swim instructor for over 3 years, taught math for 1 year in high school, and I used to go to tutoring myself for advanced math classes. These experiences combined give me the ability to both excel as a teacher along with relate to students and their struggles.

About the lesson

I will first give them an assessment to see where their level is at. After determing what concepts they already know, I try to build lessons around their weaker areas along with provide more challenging problems for the areas they are good at.

I've worked with students ranging from toddlers all the way up to high school students.

Make sure the teacher's teaching style matches your learning style. No matter how qualified a teacher is, it doesn't actually equate to teaching skills. A lot of times I see overly qualified teachers unable to sympathize with students due to their broad knowledge making them think the students already know concepts when in reality the students do not.

I was tutoring this girl who was in grade 11 at the time and she was slacking off all the time in math class resulting in her knowledge to be very minimal. Watching her progressively improve and understand concepts felt quite satisfying and makes me want to teach more students.

Details

My standard rate for tutoring is $50/hour.

Students can opt to pay for 10 hours at the cost of 9 hours if they pay the total amount upfront.
