About Mrs

I have a clear single subject teaching credential. I have been teaching for 16 years. I am also a math coordinator who oversee my district's math curriculum and instruction.

Supporting students in thinking mathematically is my utmost goal. Achieving this goal brings me joy.

I pursued my undergraduate degree in psychology in hopes to become a School Psychologist. While shadowing a Psychologist, I enjoyed working with students particularly teaching. I decided to purse a teaching career particularly in Mathematics for I have a passion for this subject. It has been 16 years since then.

I have a Masters degree in Education with a clear single subject credential in Mathematics. I have 20 years working with students, 13 of which as a secondary classroom teacher, and 3 years outside of the classroom training teachers.

About the lesson

I will start with a simple math task that is one level below the student grade level. This will help determine if the student is able to reason using mathematics. I will then start with a few prerequisite questions. I will start with a lowest depth of knowledge question and increasing the rigor level using similar questions. This way, I am able to determine the complexity in student reasoning from rote memorization to higher cognitive demand.

I've worked with a range of students from at risk youth to military students. I also tutored students in a home and facility settings.

I would look for a teacher who would use different approaches to solve a math problem. There is no one single way a student can approach and solve a problem. Both teacher and students need to learn how to think like a mathematician by looking outside the box when approaching a mathematical task.

I currently work with teachers in helping them to improve their teaching pedagogy. After a PD that I facilitated, a particular teacher implemented what I had shared in her classroom, and student engagement has increased in her classroom. She continued to use teaching pedagogy that I shared to help with student conceptual understanding.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to think about how they learn best, especially learn the concept of mathematics rather than rote memorization.
