About Brandon

I am a college student studying business and accounting. I am working towards a Bachelor's degree. I have 8 years of experience tutoring math, including but not limited to Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, basic math (elementary level), and college level math. I am very accustomed to working online and have a lot of experience tutoring over the internet through programs such as Skype, and Zoom.

I have always wanted to teach, I am currently working towards a degree to become a college professor. I plan to teach business, accounting, and/or college level math. I first started tutoring friends in middle school, then began tutoring more professionally in highschool. I expressed interest in teaching to my highschool math teacher, who acted as a mentor to me, and allowed me to teach lessons in her class to gain experience teaching.

I have 8 years of experience tutoring, 4 years of independent tutoring both online and in person, and 4 years of working as an intern for a highschool. As an intern I worked as a tutor and math instructional aide. I also founded a tutoring club in highschool where I trained fellow students to become tutors, we were approved and promoted by the school and offered after school tutoring programs for our school as well as other surrounding schools.

When working with a new student I always gauge what their understanding is by asking them to explain how they would solve problems. I reassure and give confirmation on anything that is correct and then guide them when they are making mistakes. I try to help encourage critical thinking by teaching how to analyze problems and recognize patterns to be able to solve a variety of problems and better understand a variety of concepts.

I have worked with all kinds of students. I mainly have tutored k-12 but I have also tutored at college level. I have worked with special needs. I have also worked with a large variety of learning types and understand how to adapt explanations to individuals to best teach different learning types.

Look for someone who will teach understanding of concepts, not just how to solve the problem. It is one thing to understand how to solve a problem, and another to understand how a problem works, why we solve it that way. This way of teaching allows for better understanding, that way when you face more complicated problems that break the cookiecutter understanding, there will be no problem because you understand the concept and can apply it to the problem.

I recently received an email form the parent of a student who I tutored last school year. They expressed gratitude for her son. Her son hated math and was failing Algebra. However, this hatred came from a lack of understanding and a fear of asking for help. He ended the school year with an A and now loves math, and was amongst the top of their class. This experience made me happy to know that I can make a difference in people's lives and help them gain confidence and realize anyone can be good at math.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should never be afraid to express concerns or questions to their teachers. Asking questions is how a lot of people learn. There is no shame in not knowing something or not understanding something.
