About Sophie

I have been tutoring since I myself was in high school. As a result of years of experience, I have a strong understanding of what it takes to help individuals connect and develop an inner drive to improve in their learning. I have tutored in everything from basic math to calculus, science to social studies, and all levels of reading and writing.

I am a 14-year experienced educator, having taught in both Oregon and Colorado. I have taught ages 1st to Middle school in a traditional school setting and understand how standards work together and the progression of mastery it takes to truly understand concepts.

My passion for learning and teaching has been said to be infectious. I have a natural way of connecting with individuals on a personal level and take time to really understand what might be interfering with or hindering their success.

I am a lifelong learner and passionate about deep thinking and helping others find their own drive to be successful within their education.

I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to work with learners on a one-on-one basis. This work not only benefits the learners but benefits me because it helps me understand misconceptions and stuck points of learning that are often harder to see when working in a classroom with 30 students. I can then take this learning and apply it to future instruction, thus helping me become an even better teacher.

About the lesson

I always like to start by interviewing a new client to find out what are their goals for our time together. I like to learn about them as individuals, their opinions about school, and what they think will be most helpful to support their ongoing learning. From there, we begin to look at the content and what areas of growth we might want to focus on. If possible taking to teachers can be a great way to gather information about student's strengths and where they might need extra support. From there together, we develop a plan of action that feels good and we begin. Regularly, we revisit this plan and accommodate it for changing needs.

I have worked with ALL kinds of learners, from advanced students feeling the need to be pushed to struggling learners needing support in any or all content areas.

I have worked with students who hate school and helped them find a passion for learning, and I have worked with students who love school but just need help to learn how to make it through the system.

My belief is the EVERYONE can do ANYTHING they put their mind to, and that belief is evidenced in all aspects of my life.
