About Risa

I love to help students understand the concepts they are working on and succeed in school! I always put my students FIRST and help them to feel very comfortable asking me questions about the math concepts they may not understand. I have been tutoring/teaching math for 29 years and have helped hundreds of students feel more confident in themselves.

I began teaching just after graduating from Birmingham Southern College with my Math degree. My first teaching job was actually at my own high school, where I helped develop the "learning center" for students to come get extra help with their subjects. I was the "in house" Math tutor.

About the lesson

I usually meet students for 30 minutes the first session in order to evaluate how much they truly need each week. Typically, I assist students with their lessons from their math class. Usually, I am just reinforcing the lessons and explaining things in a more detailed format.

I have worked with hundreds of students from all backgrounds and many learning styles.

Look for someone who really knows their "math" and can communicate concepts very well. Look for a tutor that you can establish a strong relationship with and feel comfortable asking any question that you have. My students have free reign to text me at any time with any math questions that might arise. Even though they only meet with me once a week, I always want them to feel comfortabel texting me between sessions if they are having trouble with a concept.

The "events" that I am most fond of are the text messages that I receive from my students letting me know that they have done well on a test or made a break through with a certain concept. I also love it when they text me with excitement to tell me they have finally reached their goal on their ACT score.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should not have to "think through" whether or not they can tallk to their teachers about their needs. If a student is taking good notes (if the teacher is providing them) and trying their hardest, they should not feel embarassed or scared to ask questions.
