About Lillian

Hello, I'm Lillian! I am here to contribute my passion and problem-solving skills to your student's success. As a student, I experienced great success at school and college due to amazing and unforgettable teachers. This is the foundation of my commitment to helping out my students, whatever their abilities may be. Nothing is as joyful as seeing a student succeed after receiving the tailored support they deserve!

I have been tutoring and teaching for 8 years in various settings – tutoring small and large groups, private individual tutoring, and teaching in suburban and urban classroom and home settings. I have tutored ages spanning from kindergarten through high school students and I taught fourth grade for a short time in Colorado. I specialize in English Language Arts work with elementary students. (My average student achieved 1.5 grade levels' worth of growth in reading over one school year!) I have the knowlege and flexibility to teach anything from organizational and testing skills to vocabulary to math through algebra.

Currently, I am certified to teach K-6 in Colorado. My undergraduate background is in Environmental and Urban Studies.

I started tutoring during study hall in high school because I loved seeing my peers get excited about understanding the material. When I reached college, I started tutoring small groups of elementary school students in reading and writing. I again found so much fulfillment in seeing others succeed that I completed an alternative-path teacher licensure program through the University of Denver.

I hold a State of Colorado teacher license to teach elementary education, which includes kindergarten through 6th grade. Before teaching, I was a high-achieving student. I completed many honors and AP classes in high school and went on to repeatedly receive the honor of Dean's List in college.

About the lesson

Our first meeting is centered around finding out what the student already knows, and where the gaps are in their knowledge so I can determine what to focus on. I like to do this through a balance of educational games and practice activitites. We also speak about the student’s goals, and then figure out the best way to proceed.

I have supported students with a variety of needs. I have worked with culturally and linguistically diverse students (including recently arrived refugees), students in special education programs, and students with various mental illnesses. I am a "people person" and love to work with students facing a challenge. The look on a student's face when they reach a lightbulb moment is precious.

I believe the key to hiring a successful tutor is finding someone around whom the student is comfortable. A student has to feel respected and safe enough to share their knowlege gaps, which can be a very vulnerable act. Being a tutor is about more than just conveying information. You develop a close relationship with your students and their families, and a lot of times become a positive role model for those students who are children.

Details

In consideration of elementary-aged students' attention spans, I offer lessons 20, 30, or 60 minutes in length at an hourly rate. There is a 24-hour cancellation policy for any reason beyond sudden illness. If the cancellation policy is not met, the student is charged for the scheduled lesson.
