About Siana
My initial Engineering Ph.D. degree, obtained in 2001, at Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in France, prepared me in depth to teach college level algebra, calculus, logic, discrete mathematics and physics. At the same time, I also acculturated in the French language and culture.
Later, I became fascinated with the visual nature of American Sign Language, so I decided to pursue the American Sign Language interpreter degree, which I obtained in 2009, at Lone Star College in Houston. I am equipped now with yet another language that I can teach, or use as communication language to teach other disciplines.
And, most recently, my recent Chemistry B.S. degree, obtained in 2019, at Montana State University Billings, allows me to practice tutoring chemistry.
Throughout my tutoring journey, the College of Reading and Learning Association professional tutor level 3 certification, obtained while tutoring at Lone Star College in Houston, has been essential to developing the teaching techniques that enable students to be successful in knowledge acquisition and to gain independence in their learning process.
Very often, in parallel with tutoring specific concepts, it is necessary to guide students in the formation of study skills and time management capabilities. Another critical component of my tutoring that is essential to the students’ academic success is the practice of test-taking and problem solving techniques.
I use a feedback loop in my tutoring to assess the progress of the student. I modify further course of tutoring by employing recollection of recent concepts every week. This ensures passage of short-term memory items into long-term memory, as well as building connections between different concepts and classes of concepts for further knowledge reinforcement.
Watching people become more prepared and more confident as we work through challenges.
The moment when the light is turned on and connections start to take place is most precious to me.
