About Elizabeth

Hi, I'm Beth - I'm a teacher with almost 20 years experience. I've been tutoring for over ten years and it's one of my favorite parts of teaching. I have a master's degree in special education and a huge toolbox full of strategies to help struggling learners of all ages.

My experience is mostly K-8, but I've also worked with high school students and adult learners.

I work hard to build relationships with my students and create lessons that keep them active and engaged and involve their interests.

I value parent input and with your permission will partner with teachers as well.

As a child I wanted to be a teacher, but in high school my guidance counselor steered me away from that career path because at that time there was projected to be a huge surplus of teachers for the near future... so I followed another passion (writing) and worked in that field for several years.

When my own children were born I volunteered at their school and was interested in how students learned in such very different ways. I finally followed my heart and pursued a teaching certificate, earning my M.Ed. in the process.

I am a certified teacher and have been in education 20+ years.  My undergraduate degree is in journalism and I am passionate about literacy. I have spent the past 15 years working with students who have academic, social, communication, and/or behaivoral struggles.

The bulk of my experience is at the elementary level, but I have also taught reading, writing, math, social studies and science in middle school and reading/language arts at the high school level and have worked with adults who are looking to improve their professional speaking and writing skills.

About the lesson

Before starting with a new student I like to take the time to do a short assessment/consultation (free of charge) to see how the student learns and help me find the gaps that may lead to their struggles. This typically takes 30-45 minutes. Following the assessment I work with the family to come up with a plan that will match their needs.

I have worked with students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including ELL students, students with special needs, and students from 3 years old to adult. I have provided help for struggling learners and created programs for families looking to enrich their child's education beyond what their schools were offering. I've consulted with parents whose children were having behavioral issues and taught social skills to students on the autism spectrum. I have also worked as an advocate for families trying to navigate the special education process.

Unrelated to teaching, but I’m thrilled to have recently become a grandmother to a sweet granddaughter. ❤️

I do not have a standard pricing system for my tutoring lessons. I calculate the price based on a number of factors including the amount of preparation/research and materials required, travel time/distance, and the type/intensity of services needed.
