About Laura

I offer a variety of lessons in drawing and painting mostly, but am also willing to branch out into other media/materials if the student is interested. I am a studio artist as well as a licensed art teacher. My work as an artist inspires my teaching at all levels. I believe strongly in creating a student-centered, welcoming, and accessible approach to creating art so all students are able to find and nurture their inner artist in a meaningful and fun way.

I enjoy many aspects of creative work and teaching. Art and creativity have tremendous powers to connect us and enlighten our experiences together. Helping others discover this as well as their own inner strengths as far as art and creativity is my favorite part of teaching, making, and sharing art.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I like to start by learning a little bit about them in general--interests, hobbies, work, school, etc, as well as their artistic background. I have experience working with those who are very comfortable in their artistic abilities as well as those who have completely lost touch with their creative self and are looking for opportunities to grow and reconnect with that side of themselves. I like to start with a series of very simple, approachable drawing exercises that will give me an idea of the students strengths and areas of growth. I use these as a starting point to help determine future lessons, exercises, projects. This is balanced with the students interests, talents, and personal direction.
