About Rachel

I started teaching in graduate school. I just love school and have an ability for making information accessible. At that time I was offered an opportunity to teach and it was very natural for me to slide into that role. I loved it so much, I never stopped.

In addition to my extensive experience teaching I have participated in numerous professional development classes and workshops continually keeping up with developing my knowledge and approach. My favorite recent professional development certification is Teaching Critical Thinking Through Art from The National Gallery of Art and Harvard Graduate School for Education.

About the lesson

Open conversation is the best! It's helpful for me to have a brief introductory conversation at no charge before the first lesson to hear details, expectations and goals for the desired content area to be mastered and get specific information regarding the areas where my help is needed.

Then it's great to talk about what usually goes smoothly and what is challenging during studying or in the art-making process. What types of organizational, practical or studying strategies have been used or tried successfully and unsuccessfully in the past? What feels super frustrating or particularly difficult to understand?

For studio art: I use a three-part approach in each lesson that includes:
1. Getting Ready. Discussing examples, history, techniques, viewing examples, teacher demos and preparing and caring for materials

2. Work time. During which I watch and ask students to notice what they are doing, artistic choices they are making and work with critical thinking strategies to develop awareness of technique, the progression of the work and possible solutions to a variety of creative challenges.

3. Reflection. This is a time to practice non-judgmental, objective, self analysis of technique, progress, results, approach, how to complete work and describing experiences while working. I provide guiding observations and questions as well as assessment criteria for collaborative student-teacher evaluation of progress.

I have taught Pre K through graduate programs in public and private schools in New York City, public and private college and university, art-making workshops for older adults and worked for a number of years with youth with chronic medical conditions in the hospital setting.

For studio art: Ask the teacher if they teach basing their approach on student development, goals and mastering process or if the teacher will be presenting examples and expect you to follow along and duplicate the teacher's or other example's results. Ask how each session is planned out. A well organized teacher plans their lessons and approach in advance making, helping information presented and your practice time flow smoothly. Ask if the teacher will be assessing your progress through objective, anti-biased criteria or on an ability to copy references. Ask if the teacher shares the assessment criteria.

For art history: Ask the teacher what resources they use and what their views on global art history are. A strong art history tutor should be able to teach the diversity of global artmaking from multiple historical and research perspectives accurately and use current, updated research sources. The teacher should work with the AP curriculum and at least be familiar with it even if teaching lower grade levels.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do you want or feel/think you need a tutor?

Be specific and realistic.
For example: Do you really want to draw or paint realistically or do you want to draw in an Anime style? Do you want to be able to "paint like voyeur favorite artist" or do you want to dive into creating a body of work to fulfill AP requirements?

What specific aspects of an art-making technique are blocking you on from meeting your goals? What have you tried in the past to get past the block/s? What worked and didn't work? Are you ready to try approaches that might be new for you and could feel challenging before you see improvement.

Are you ready to commit to attending sessions and practicing outside of sessions?
Understand meeting your goals takes time and practice.
Don't expect to achieve mastery in one or two sessions. Think through want you want to achieve before setting expectations for yourself or the teacher in your mind. Can you realistically stay focused for an hour in a remote tutoring session?

What level of accomplishment will you be satisfied with when your sessions are finished?
Define realistic expectations for yourself according to where you are now with the learning content, where you want to go and what works with your family's plan for tutoring.

Details

I have an hourly rate or 55$ per hour and charge the approximate equivalent of 30 minutes (27$) for a no show and the approximate equivalent of 15 minutes ($15) for same day cancellations.

I provide individual sessions and multi-week programs of study.
For multi-week art-making programs a typical advanced art-making unit is once or twice per week for 8 weeks with required practice outside of sessions for approaching mastery of a single technique. A typical basic art-making unit is once per week with some optional practice separate from tutoring sessions for 6 weeks. Other levels not listed here can be discussed when requesting a quote.

Grades 9 through university/college level accepted.

Methods, techniques and processes I teach include:
Traditional and expressive drawing, painting, 2D design, basic ceramics/handbuilding, combined processes and digital collage, AP Art Studio and AP Art History.

I do not teach photography, Anime, illustration, industrial design or advanced ceramics/wheel throwing.
