About Joey

My name is Joey, I’m 18 and I live in Abingdon.

I’m currently doing a degree apprenticeship with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, working in a lab as a scientist while studying for my degree. I’ve always enjoyed Maths and Science, but I’m also a very sociable person and definitely not the stereotypical silent maths tutor!

I’m outgoing, energetic and easy to talk to, and I try to bring that into my tutoring. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, getting things wrong and having another go without feeling judged.

Outside of tutoring and science, I’m a black belt in karate, I love music, debating and sport, and my favourite food is lamb!

I enjoy meeting new people and helping students realise that Maths can actually be satisfying once things start to click.

About the lesson

My approach to lessons is questions, questions, questions!

I believe the best way to improve at Maths is by actively practising it. My students and I start with the foundations of each topic, making sure they understand the key concepts before gradually progressing to more challenging content and exam-style questions.

My goal is not only to improve students’ Maths grades, but also to build their confidence in the subject and help them feel more comfortable in their school lessons and exams.

Lessons are usually 1 hour, although I am flexible depending on the needs of the student.

I have one year of tutoring experience, having tutored 3 GCSE Maths students and 1 11+ Maths student, all of whom were happy with my tutoring. I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE Maths and an A in A-Level Maths.

I am happy to tutor students aged 9–16, including 11+, KS3 and GCSE Maths, both online and in person in Abingdon.

I highly recommend Joey as an outstanding mathematics tutor. Joey tutored my son for 1 year and in that time demonstrated an exceptional ability to explain complex mathematical concepts in a clear and engaging way.

My son has several learning difficulties that effect his engagement and communication. It was amazing to see him finally come out of his shell and develop a real passion for the subject. It would have been amazing enough to see my child pass let alone achieve an 8 at GCSE and then go on to study mathematics at A Level. I simply cannot thank Joey enough!
