About Amanda

For over eight years, I have dedicated my life to the education of minorities, immigrants, and notably English language learners as a tutor, mentor, coach and teacher across the country, from Pittsburgh, to Washington, D.C., and San Francisco/Bay Area. In that time, I have helped individuals from all over the world, of all ages and backgrounds, improve their writing, grammar and public speaking skills by challenging them to take a different approach to the learning process. As a result, I have seen students develop greater confidence in their abilities as they write stronger papers, give better presentations, pass their classes, and go on to graduate and be an active, competent participant in their future jobs.

What I love about teaching and tutoring is witnessing the true growth and transformation in my students. As I see students push themselves to learn and overcome their obstacles, I feel a genuine sense of joy at my core, because not only do I see that they are learning, but I also find myself growing with them. It is my students’ determination, energy, and consistency that encourages me to be a better teacher.

About the lesson

What matters to me first is to understand who you are and what you are seeking to gain out of tutoring. After spending time talking about your goals, we will then work together to come up with a personalized learning path that is customized to suit your needs, style, and preferences. In each session you can expect to learn something new and put what you learn immediately into practice, all the while developing your skills, understanding and application.

My methods are grounded in communicative teaching where I value collaborating with learners, making learning relevant and applicable to their lives, and encouraging learners to reach their potential. To me, learning should be fun and engaging, and so will I use a variety of creative, dynamic methods to stimulate your learning in a fresh, engaging way. For lessons on writing, I follow the process approach, where I will ask you questions to guide you through the writing process as we move from thinking about your ideas to developing them, in order to get at your organization, flow, and grammar usage. You will also find that in my writing lessons I will engage with you and your writing through multiple modes (e.g. talking, drawing, post-it notes, etc.) so that you will be best equipped to dive into writing.
