About Amanda
I am a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island, studying elementary education. I have taken several courses thus far in my college career to prepare myself for a potential career as a teacher/educator. I have had many many opportunities to work in my future field including working as an in-home tutor for a local family near me with three special needs boys in elementary school. With this family I provided educational and behavioral support when needed by getting to know my students and finding out what the best method of tutoring for them would be. In addition I have also had the opportunity to volunteer in multiple elementary classes as a para or teacher assistant, getting more experience working with students in different subjects. Finally, I have also had the opportunity to expand my interests and teach to a group of preschool students in a classroom setting, promoting reading and writing skills.

From my experience, I have learned that every student benefits from a different teaching approach. For me when I am working with students I always begin by asking questions to get a feel for the students knowledge and how they learn best. From my work with special needs children, I learned that some individuals require more independence and freedom to learn and grow where other students require much more hands on and involvement. When working individually with students I do my best to find what works best for each students needs and I stick to that method, however when working in larger groups, I try to use a combination of different methods including independent work, group collaboration, visual aids, auditory aids, ect.
