About Sofia

Hi! My name is Sofia, and I am a neuroscience pre-medical student with a strong background in biology, chemistry, algebra, and statistics. I graduated from International Academy East with an IB Diploma, where I took IB Biology HL and earned IB credit for biology. I also wrote two research papers focused on biology, which helped me develop a deeper interest in the subject and strengthen my research and scientific writing skills.

Since graduating, I have continued building my biology background through college coursework in upper-level biology such as cell biology and human physiology. I have also taken Honors General Chemistry I and II and Organic Chemistry I, and I have performed well in each of these courses. Because I have worked through these subjects at both the high school and college level, I understand how challenging they can feel and how important it is to build a strong foundation.

Statistics is another subject I particularly enjoy. I studied statistics for two years at the IB level in high school and continued with a college statistics course, where I earned a near-perfect grade. I also took Honors Algebra in high school and have always enjoyed algebra and problem-solving.

I also have experience tutoring classmates and friends in college as well as little sibling in high school. I have helped several of my friends work through difficult concepts, practice problems, and prepare for exams, and every one of them have gone on to earn excellent grades, including acing their exams. These experiences have shown me how much I enjoy helping others understand material that initially feels difficult.

As a tutor, I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. I am patient, encouraging, and willing to explain a concept in multiple ways until it makes sense. My goal is not just to help students get through an assignment or prepare for an exam, but to help them actually understand the material and become more confident in their own abilities.

I tutor high school and college students in biology, General Chemistry, algebra, and statistics. Whether you are struggling with a difficult concept, preparing for an exam, or looking to strengthen your understanding of a subject, I am happy to work with you and tailor lessons to what you need most!

My approach to tutoring is centered around making difficult subjects feel understandable rather than overwhelming. I believe students learn best when they understand why something works instead of simply memorizing steps, so I focus on breaking complicated concepts into smaller pieces, explaining them in different ways, and working through problems together.

A typical lesson begins by identifying what the student is struggling with and reviewing any important foundations they may be missing. From there, I explain the concept clearly, work through a few examples with the student, and then have them try problems independently while I provide guidance when needed. I also like to end lessons by reviewing the most important ideas and identifying what the student should practice before our next session.

What sets me apart is that I am a student myself, so I understand what it feels like to encounter a difficult topic for the first time. I try to create a comfortable environment where students can ask questions without feeling embarrassed or rushed. I am especially good at finding different ways to explain a concept when the first explanation does not click.

I tutor high school and college students in general biology, high school biology, General Chemistry I, algebra, and statistics. I can help with homework, exam preparation, reviewing difficult concepts, building stronger study habits, and catching up in a course. Whether a student needs help with one specific topic or wants consistent support throughout a class, I tailor each lesson to their individual needs!
