About Alex

An LGBTQ+ artist and illustrator with over a decade of experience in the academic side of the arts, as well as the freelance, arts administration and art teaching industries. I specialize in realistic, surrealistic and illustrative drawing, printmaking, embroidery, and digital drawing and design. I am available to teach a variety of subjects, including drawing and life drawing, design, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, printmaking, and portfolio prep and art school prep. I have experience in teaching children and adults on the neurodivergent or autism spectrum, and anyone who falls under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. I also have experience in teaching all ages, including children, teens, adults and older folks, as well as all skill levels. Whether you're just starting out on your journey as an artist, have some knowledge, or you're more advanced and looking to dive into special focuses, I'm confident I can guide you.

About the lesson

Introductory Lesson (up to 1 hour): Meet to discuss where student is, where they want to be, and develop a plan together for how to get there. Go over supplies needed for follow up lessons.

2nd lesson: Start with drawing fundamentals, do warm up and practice exercises focused on student's interests, identify further focuses to pursue in following lessons

3rd-6th Lessons: Focus in on a variety of possible subjects including: botanical drawing, figure drawing, portrait drawing, wildlife drawing, live sketching, plein air drawing, visual journaling, traditional illustration, digital illustration, printmaking (relief printing and screen printing) and more.

My teaching style is focused on visual and hands on learners, explaining all the details and the whys as we go, so that the student can understand not only how to do it in the moment, but the theory so they can do it again, on their own in the future. I want to encourage students to seek inspiration from other professionals to ignite their own artistic voice and vision. As a teacher I'm very guided by the students needs and desires, happy to re-explain whenever necessary, and creating tips and trick for them to recall information to use as needed.
