About Alfie

About Me:
- Undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, studying Classics.
- Achieved 11 Grade 9s at GCSE.
- Achieved 4 A*s at A-Level, alongside an A in AS Level.
- Ranked top of my school cohort in both Year 13 mock examination series
across all four A-Level subjects.
- ABRSM Grade 8 Piano.

Subjects I Offer:

Tutoring Experience:

- Helped one student improve from Grades 6/7 to Grades 8/9 in Science mock examinations, and another improve from a Grade 4 in English Language mocks to a Grade 6 in their GCSE final exam.
- Experience working within my school's tutoring programme, supporting GCSE Biology and English Language students.

About the lesson

I start each lesson with around 5 minutes of rapid-fire recap questions to reinforce previous learning and identify areas that need revisiting.

The remainder of the lesson focuses on exam-style questions. I first guide students through a past paper question. For example, for a four-mark question, I might ask what four points they would make, then explore what else could be relevant if I feel some of their ideas might not be on the mark scheme. I guide students towards the key points rather than simply giving them the answers, using prompts to help them work things out for themselves.

We then review the student’s answer against the mark scheme before creating a full-marks checklist, giving them a clear guide to answering that question type successfully in future.

To maximise productivity and make use of active recall, I encourage students to turn past paper questions and our checklists into flashcards using Anki or Quizlet. I’m more than happy to show students how to set these up and use them effectively.

This is the revision method I personally used to achieve top grades across my exams, so it’s one I know very well and can teach with confidence.

Beyond revision, I aim to be a friendly and approachable face. Being closer in age to my students than most teachers means I can relate to the challenges of secondary school and offer advice based on my own recent experience.

Alongside practice questions, I like to use videos and other helpful online resources to make lessons more engaging, varied and interactive.

I kindly ask that any cancellations be made at least 3 hours in advance. For cancellations made within 3 hours of the scheduled lesson, I would appreciate a contribution of half the lesson fee (£12) to cover preparation time.
