About Nancy

In teaching saxophone, I believe in a balanced approach that combines disciplined technical training with nurturing each student’s creative expression and personal connection to music. Building a strong foundation of breath support, embouchure control, finger dexterity, posture, articulation, and tone production is my priority, as these are essential to playing with clarity and emotion. I pay close attention to intonation and dynamic shaping, helping students develop a refined and versatile sound. Improvisation plays a vital role in lessons; I guide students through scales, chord changes, and phrasing exercises designed to build confidence and encourage originality. Music theory is integrated into lessons through practical application, ensuring students understand the harmonic and melodic structures they are working with. I tailor repertoire to align with students’ tastes and goals, including jazz, blues, classical, and popular music, which maintains motivation and relevance. We set achievable goals together and develop structured practice plans to sustain progress and enthusiasm. I incorporate technology, including recording software, metronomes, and backing tracks, to promote effective practice and critical listening skills. A rewarding experience was witnessing a student transform from hesitant beginner to confident soloist capable of expressive improvisation. My mission is to develop saxophonists who are technically accomplished, creatively vibrant, and deeply connected to their music.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy for saxophone is built on the belief that technique and musicality must go hand in hand to create truly expressive playing. I dedicate the initial lessons to mastering fundamentals such as breath control, embouchure, finger coordination, articulation, tone production, and rhythmic precision. This technical foundation is essential for a healthy, sustainable saxophone practice.

However, I also strongly believe in nurturing creativity and personal expression, so I incorporate improvisation exercises, phrasing studies, and stylistic explorations spanning jazz, blues, classical, and contemporary music. Every student is unique, so I adapt lessons to their individual interests and goals, ensuring that learning is both relevant and motivating.

I use technology extensively—recording tools, backing tracks, tuners, and metronomes—to provide immediate feedback and enhance practice efficiency. Performance skills are also a focus; I encourage students to participate in recitals, ensembles, and informal jam sessions to develop confidence and stage presence.

One memorable moment was coaching a student who initially struggled with tone quality but, through focused breath work and embouchure exercises, developed a rich, warm sound that amazed their family at a recital. Ultimately, my goal is to foster technically proficient, expressive saxophonists who feel empowered to share their unique musical voice with the world.
