About Laurie

At the age of 6, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I can recall playing school with my sisters and I, as the teacher, would grade the tests that I prepared for them, marking 100% A+ . After graduating college with a Master’s in Mathematics, I taught Special Education Math at a high school for 2 years, Real Estate Math at Weichert Realtors for 1 year, and various college math courses at different colleges and universities for over 10 years (both online and onsite courses).

As an undergraduate math major in college, I served as a peer tutor in freshman level math courses, including Basic Math, Algebra, and Survey of Math. By the time I became a Junior in college, I was promoted to the position of Supplemental Instructor. My duties included attending class with the students and then offer class tutoring sessions outside of the scheduled class time. As a college Professor, I have taught Basic Math, Intro to Algebra, Algebra, Finite Math, Math for Elementary Education Teachers, and Survey of Math, to name a few. I continue to tutor my college students 1-on-1, when they come for office hours. Tutoring 1-on-1 affords me the opportunity to locate any learning gaps, and to fill them without the distractions of a classroom setting.

Throughout these experiences, I have learned several strategies to meet the needs of various learning styles. Some of these strategies include rewording questions, drawing pictures, and even making up songs. Whatever I can do to help the student understand the material in an interactive and engaging way, I am willing to do it.

About the lesson

My lessons usually begin with a recap of previously learned content, relevant to what is needed for the current lesson. Then we will have an interactive lesson followed by time for practice of what was learned. Then we will conclude with follow-up questions to review what was learned during the session. One key factor that I have found to block the success of many of my students is FEAR. This is why my goal is not to just help the students understand the content, but to boost their confidence as well. I believe that with the proper tools and support, every student is capable of having good success in math.
