  • How did you develop an interest in this field?

I started doing yoga first when I was 10yrs old attending an art of living workshop. I was not interested in it much then but on attending a second workshop, I slowly developed an interest to it. After my 12th grade we had a community oriented yoga programme in our village and me and my entire family participated in it and that programme entered the Limca book of world records for our Village Kunnamthanam being a complete yoga village. I grew more serious about yoga in the second year of my college when I was dealing with a lot of stress, depression and anxiety. Yoga was a way of release and happiness for me. I grew more close to yoga during the lockdown days and never missed a day of doing it. I took another #100daysyofachallenge on twitter and was able to complete it successfully. Thats when I came across Superprof ads. Teaching had always been a passion of mine maybe because my Mom is a physics teacher herself and I used to sit in awe watching her teaching methods. Once I started giving classes on Superprof, I thoroughly enjoyed each and every moment and always had something to do in my free time. I was able to connect with a lot of students and seeing them enjoy my class gave me a lot of happiness. These classes also helped me improve a lot in this field and I am far more confident and acquainted with yoga now compared to where I started.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

My Mother who is a teacher herself is my motivation. She is a higher secondary school teacher and I have often heard students complimenting her about her teaching methods. When I was young I used to give pretend classes using my mother's chalkboard as I loved teaching. I even tutored a student of 10th when I myself was in 12th and even some of my friends who all told me I had a gift to teach. I think that gift is passed down from my mother. Like her I enjoy teaching and it gives me immense pleasure.
  • How does your work help society?

Yoga is a very essential component that one needs to practice in life both for the physical and mental well being. It has the power to hinder a lot of lifestyle diseases and has great positive effects on a troubled mind.Yoga is recommended even by doctors for those dealing with depression and anxiety problems. So I think that by introducing more people and children to the world of yoga with my classes they can achieve all the above benefits thereby contributing to a fit and healthy society.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

A role model for my work would be Kassandra who is a yoga trainer with a lot of followers on YouTube. I am impressed by the soft peaceful way in which she teaches. Her voice is very soothing and I could easily understand each and every component of her classes. Her poses are smooth and clean which makes us drawn to her for more classes. She begins each of her classes with a positive affirmation for the day which fills us with an optimistic attitude. She doesn't talk too much or too less in her classes, but just enough. I want to be a teacher like her.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Besides teaching yoga, I am now in the final year of my MBBS course set to become a doctor. I aim to incorporate knowledge from my medicine studies in my yoga teaching too. Other hobbies of mine include drawing during my free times, giving out grammar classes, dancing.I have learnt classical dance for 9yrs so enjoy both doing and watching dance. Other hobbies of mine which relaxes me is gardening and cooking both of which developed during the lockdown days.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

I have a dog. His name is Bruno. Whenever I teach, he loves to come and interrupt me by knocking the phone down, playing with the mat, running around barking and what not. One day I was teaching yoga and doing shavasana when Bruno came and lay down on the yoga mat beside me and started chewing on it. I heard the giggles from my student and had to turn off the video and lock him in a room till I completed the class. He is one naughty boy, still I love him a lot. 😁
